The best base depends on what you want within walking distance
Naxos Town, also called Chora or Hora, is the practical default if you want town evenings and bus outings. Agios Georgios gives you a sandy beach close to town. Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna suit a stay where swimming and nearby meals matter more than walking back from the castle streets. Plaka is a long coastal area, so the room pin matters more than the beach name.
For a short first stay, use one base. Moving from town to a beach hotel costs another packing and transfer day; a beach visit by bus may give you the same change of scene. These are area recommendations, not hotel endorsements or claims about room availability.

| Your decision | Choose it for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Naxos Town / Chora | Port access, town meals and inland bus outings | A castle-area address can involve climbs or steps; inspect the approach |
| Agios Georgios | Sand close to town; a useful first family shortlist | You still need transport to Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and inland villages |
| Agios Prokopios | A beach base with shops and restaurants near the bus corridor | Town evenings require a return bus or other transfer |
| Agia Anna | Beach time beside the next stop south of Agios Prokopios | A coastal stay rather than a town stay; match the room to the stop |
| Plaka / Maraggas | A longer beach setting and days spent locally | Spread-out addresses; nearest stop and meals need individual checking |
| Halki or Filoti | An inland-village focus | Beach days and ferry transfers become deliberate journeys |
Naxos Town: easiest for a mixed first trip
Chora puts the port, waterfront and castle streets in the same base. The public-bus operator identifies the town terminal at the port, with services towards the west-coast beaches. This makes town a useful choice if some days go inland and others go to the sea.
Choose the lower town when luggage handling and a straightforward arrival matter more than an elevated old-town address. A room described as being in Chora does not tell you whether the final approach has steps. If you want a beach immediately nearby, compare Agios Georgios rather than assuming every town address has the same walk.

The municipal tourism guide places Agios Georgios about 1 km from Naxos port. It describes fine sand, shallow water and nearby taverns, cafés and shops. That combination makes it the first area to compare for a family wanting sand and town meals without a daily beach transfer.
The southern end is also a windsurfing area. Do not treat shallow water as a promise of safe conditions: choose the swimming spot for the conditions that day and supervise children. Compare the exact walk from the property to the beach and town, especially with a buggy; this guide does not certify step-free hotel or beach access.

Agios Prokopios lies about 5 km from Naxos Town. The bus operator describes accommodation, restaurants and shops around the resort, with the bus calling at the southern part of the beach. Agia Anna is the next beach area south and has several bus stops on the same coastal corridor.
Choose Agios Prokopios if you want the beach and everyday services close together. Compare Agia Anna if the exact room and beach access there suit you better. Neither is a substitute for a town base if you plan to spend every evening in Chora: the last return bus, or the cost of another transfer, becomes part of the room choice. Beachfront cafés and clubs also make room position relevant for noise; a sea view is not a quiet-room guarantee.

Plaka continues beyond Agia Anna; its northern beginning is also called Maraggas. The bus operator describes stops along nearly 3 km of coastal road. Two properties sold under the Plaka name can therefore mean quite different walks to a stop, restaurant or shop.
Plaka suits a holiday where you expect to spend most of the day near your accommodation. Before choosing a room farther along the coast, locate the actual stop and an evening meal option on the same map. For a first visit relying on public transport, reject a room whose only advantage is a low nightly rate if every ordinary errand then needs a paid transfer.

Halki and Filoti are inland alternatives for travellers who want village time to be the centre of the stay. They are not beach suburbs. Naxos also has mountain villages such as Apeiranthos, but a village name in a tourism guide does not establish convenient public transport for your dates.
For a first holiday mixing coast and inland visits, stay in town and choose a village outing with an outward and return service. Choose an inland overnight base only when its daily rhythm is the reason for the trip and you have arranged the ferry-day transfer.

You can plan a Naxos holiday without a car by keeping everyday needs in town or one beach area and using the published beach corridor for outings. That is different from promising unrestricted access to every village or remote beach.
The English bus-schedules page retrieved on 24 October 2026 still displayed a 1–8 May 2026 timetable. Its times are not current October, winter or future-summer departures. Use the operator’s date-valid timetable before making a late dinner or ferry transfer depend on a bus; if none covers your dates, arrange that essential journey separately.

Compare the full stay cost: accommodation, port or airport transfer, planned bus journeys and any taxi needed after services stop. There is no verified island-wide price ranking between these areas. Ask the property about the precise arrival approach, steps, room orientation and nearby seasonal openings.
If the deciding question is which island makes the easier car-free holiday, compare bases and transport rather than the islands’ size alone.
