Naxos travel planning: beaches, villages and a practical base

Choose Naxos for a holiday with room for both sandy beaches and inland villages, then match the base to your transport.

Choose Naxos if you want more than a beach stop

Naxos combines long sandy beaches with mountain landscapes and traditional villages. Hora, also called Naxos Town, has a Venetian castle above the town; inland, Halki, Filoti and marble-paved Apeiranthos offer a different focus from the coast. Choose it when those two sides of the island appeal, rather than because a ferry route makes it easy to add another pin.

Hora or a beach base?

Choose Hora if castle streets, town meals and evenings on foot matter more than waking up beside one of the named beach areas. Choose Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna if the beach is the centre of most days. Plaka belongs on a beach-led shortlist too, but an address there is not a substitute for a transport plan into town or inland. For a first stay without a car, favour a room near the things you want to do every day; arrange Halki, Filoti or Apeiranthos as separate outings.

Compare the areas before choosing a room

The area guide compares named bases, beach access, public transport and the compromises of staying in town, beside the coast or inland. Use it to choose the location before comparing individual properties.

Where to stay in Naxos

Choose the base around the days

Town and evening walks
Investigate Hora; check the exact room location rather than the town name alone.
Mostly beach time
Compare Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna and Plaka against your transfer needs.
Inland village visits
Keep space in the plan for Halki, Filoti or Apeiranthos rather than squeezing them into a ferry day.
No car
Verify how each planned day starts and how you will get back to the same base.

A four-night Naxos outline

Arrival day: settle into one base and stay local. First full day: explore Hora’s castle streets. Second full day: choose Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna for beach time. Third full day: visit Halki or Filoti with a workable return journey, or take a second beach day at Plaka. Departure day: keep the morning around the confirmed ferry rather than adding a remote outing. Add a fifth night if you want another village day or more beach time; this is an editorial pace suggestion, not a transport schedule.

Make the island’s differences part of the plan

The Portara and Hora’s castle streets provide a town focus, while the inland villages give the trip another rhythm. Naxos’s fertile landscape also appears in its potatoes, cheeses and citron products. You do not need a strenuous mountain itinerary to make the inland landscape worthwhile. Any hike needs separate assessment of route, weather and your abilities; the presence of Mount Zas in a tourism guide is not a safety assessment for your chosen walk.

Verify the arrival before arranging the room transfer

A dated Blue Star notice for early October 2026 documents Piraeus, Paros and Naxos in a sailing sequence, alongside disruptions. That is evidence for a corridor in that period, not today’s schedule or a guaranteed direct service on your date. Search the outward and onward legs separately. If using air travel instead, confirm the actual flight with the airline; a destination guide’s airport description does not establish bookable inventory.

Keep the wider route simple

A good Naxos stay can be the main holiday. Use the regional guide only if another island adds enough to justify the move.
