Corfu travel guide: town, beaches and getting around
Plan a Corfu holiday around Old Town, a beach base or both. Compare arrival routes, car-free days, coastal outings and realistic lengths of stay.
Is Corfu the right Greek island for you?
Choose Corfu if you want a historic town as well as beach days, and are willing to plan journeys between them. Corfu Town works for a short car-free visit; a coastal base works better when swimming is the main purpose of the holiday. A beach hotel elsewhere on the island does not give you Old Town evenings on foot. Our starting recommendation is three or four nights for a town-led break with one coastal outing, or about a week for town plus several beach days. Those are editorial pacing suggestions, not minimum stays. Keep a short trip within Corfu rather than adding a second island simply because both belong to the Ionian group.
Start with a walk through Corfu Old Town
For a first town day, start at Spianada and Liston, continue towards the Church of St Spyridon, then explore the lanes and small squares of Campiello. Choose the Old Fortress or the Museum of Asian Art as a separate visit rather than squeezing both into arrival afternoon. Visit Greece identifies the town between its Old and New Fortresses and places the Museum of Asian Art in the Palace of St Michael and St George.[1] This is a suggested walking sequence, not a timed admission itinerary. The historic core restricts vehicles, so an Old Town address can involve carrying bags from a peripheral drop-off. A room in a narrow lane is a different arrival proposition from a hotel on a road with vehicle access.[1]
[1] Visit Greece: Old Town of CorfuChoose the beach day by coast, not by a generic island list
Paleokastritsa on the west coast suits a day around coves, rocky scenery and the monastery area; it is not one uninterrupted sandy resort beach. Glyfada and Agios Gordios are better starting points if a sandy west-coast beach is the priority. The northeast has smaller coves, while Issos and Chalikounas in the southwest offer sand and dune landscapes; Chalikounas is beside Lake Korission.[2] Pick one coastal area for a day out from town. Do not combine Paleokastritsa, a distant southern beach and a northern resort merely to tick names off a map. Beach descriptions do not establish safe swimming conditions, lifeguard coverage or step-free access on your day.
[2] Visit Greece: beaches of CorfuGetting to Corfu: airport or mainland ferry
An airport arrival can connect with Corfu Town, the intercity bus station and the port using City Bus route 15. A mainland approach uses a separately booked crossing from Igoumenitsa; Kerkyra Lines publishes that route with a date selector. Neither arrival method automatically includes the transfer to a distant coastal hotel.[3][6] For a flight arrival, first choose whether your destination is town or a resort. For a mainland ferry arrival, use the port printed on your ticket and plan the last land journey. Do not copy the departures currently visible on a ferry webpage into a future itinerary: select the travel date and passenger or vehicle requirements.
[3] Corfu City Bus: airport, port and local connectionsCorfu without a car: two bus networks, two different jobs
City Bus is the useful network for the airport, town and nearby east-coast bases. Its connection guide identifies route 6 for Benitses and route 7 via Gouvia and Dassia towards Ipsos. For island outings, Green Buses lists A9 Paleokastritsa, A4 Kassiopi, A2 Sidari, B10 Agios Gordios and B17 Glyfada, among other routes.[3][5] San Rocco, the town departure streets and the intercity bus station are not interchangeable boarding points. Start an outing by finding the correct outward stop and return journey. A bus connection to a resort does not establish a convenient evening return, a direct bus between two resorts or a beach-front stop at your hotel.

City Bus announced a route 15 update effective 24 October 2026; the linked timetable separates weekdays, Saturday and Sunday or holidays. Its route 15 entries distinguish airport-to-port journeys from services that terminate at San Rocco. A late airport bus should not be assumed to continue to the ferry port.[4] Green Buses also displayed a new-timetable notice effective 24 October 2026 when checked. Use the current route page for the actual travel day, including the return direction. No bus departure times or fares are fixed in this guide.[5]
[4] Corfu City Bus: timetable updated 24 October 2026A practical four-night Corfu outline
For a first visit without moving hotels, stay in or near Corfu Town. Use arrival afternoon for Liston and the central lanes. Give the first full day to Campiello and one town sight, the second to Paleokastritsa if its return bus fits, and the third to a different beach or a slower town day. Depart after the fourth night. This is our suggested pace; swap the beach day when weather or services make it unsuitable. For a week focused on swimming, choose a coastal base and give town one or two deliberate visits instead. If you split town and coast, treat the hotel move as a transfer rather than another full beach day. A rental car is useful for several dispersed stops, but unnecessary for the town walking day.
Paxos is a separate journey, not an automatic extra day
The northern Ionian pairing of Corfu and Paxos can make sense when a smaller-island stay is the aim. Decide that before booking two hotels: an excursion cruise, a passenger transfer and a vehicle ferry are different products. This guide does not establish a Corfu–Paxos sailing on your date. For a short Corfu break, the town and one coast already provide a usable plan.
Sources and planning limits
Official tourism and transport sources checked 25 October 2026. The linked route 15 notice and Green Buses homepage identify the current timetable change; they do not establish future summer services. Accommodation costs depend on your dates and room, and ferry costs on the selected crossing and ticket. No live hotel price, attraction opening hour or future departure is asserted.
