Ionian island hopping: choose a western cluster before ferries

Choose one Ionian subregion, not a seven-island checklist

For a northern trip, start with Corfu and investigate whether a Paxi stay genuinely adds to it. For a central trip, compare Kefalonia with Ithaca, or a Lefkada base with its own outings. Choose Zakynthos because you want that island, not because it looks like the next automatic stop.

For about a week, our starting recommendation is one substantial island stay or two carefully connected bases. The Ionian group lies west of mainland Greece: it is a separate trip shape from a short Naxos–Paros holiday, not a spare ferry day to attach to it.

What each place adds

Visit Greece identifies Corfu’s Old Town and fortresses, Paxi’s Gaios, road-accessible Lefkada, and Kefalonia’s Myrtos, Melissani and Ainos landscapes. Ithaca is a separate neighbouring island rather than a district of Kefalonia.[15]

Use those differences to decide what deserves nights. A Corfu town visit and a Kefalonia landscape stay can both be worthwhile, but combining them adds a substantial transport question. If you cannot identify the dated connection, keep the second idea for another trip.

A real warning about the advertised through-line

Lefkada Palace’s homepage retrieved on 24 October 2026 explicitly says its Ionian passenger-ferry line is “not currently operating”. The same page still displays route cards and weekday patterns for Corfu, Paxi, Lefkada, Meganisi, Ithaca, Kefalonia and Zante.[16]

Do not treat those retained cards as bookable current sailings. Resolve the operator’s latest status and an actual dated ticket before building a through-itinerary. A sightseeing cruise is also not automatically an island-to-island transport ticket for a hotel move.

A seven-night plan to test, not a ferry package

For a northern two-base version, an editorial starting allocation is four Corfu nights and three Paxi nights, but only after both entry and exit journeys are confirmed. A central alternative is four Kefalonia nights and three Ithaca nights under the same condition. The transfer is a hotel-move day; do not sell yourself seven full sightseeing days.

If dated transport does not support the second base, keep all seven nights on the anchor island and vary local days. These patterns are pacing recommendations, not proof of a sailing, driving time or protected connection.

Choose the base and season together

Map the arrival port to the accommodation, then plan daily transport. A famous beach, cave or national park does not imply it is beside the room or open on your date. In quieter periods, confirm local transport and activity operations before choosing an isolated address.

Book ports, not island labels

Record exact ports, times, passenger or vehicle basis, luggage, the last local transfer and cancellation terms. Taking a rental vehicle requires its own permission and a vehicle-capable sailing. Keep recovery time before a hard onward flight and avoid treating a missing direct result as a confirmed indirect route.
