Lefkada travel guide: bases, beaches and getting around
Plan Lefkada around town, Nidri, Agios Nikitas or Vasiliki. Understand bridge access, the airport transfer, west-coast beaches and the limits of a car-free stay.
Is Lefkada the right island for your holiday?
Choose Lefkada if you want a Greek island holiday that can be reached by road, with a choice between town, coastal bases and beach outings. A floating bridge connects it to mainland Greece: arriving from the mainland does not require a ferry. That advantage ends at arrival; you still need a plan for reaching the room and the beaches.[1] For a first visit, our starting recommendation is five to seven nights in one base. Choose town for evenings and bus planning, Nidri for the local stay and its published bus corridor, Agios Nikitas for a west-coast village stay, or Vasiliki when its bay and windsurfing are the reason for travelling. A short stay works best in one area rather than as a race around the coastline.
[1] Visit Greece: Lefkada and its mainland bridgeGetting to Lefkada: the bridge and Aktion Airport
For a road arrival, cross the mainland link into the town end of the island, then continue to your chosen base. Do not buy an unrelated ferry crossing merely because Lefkada appears in an island-hopping search. A road-accessible island is useful for a mainland combination, but it does not make every beach a short or simple drive.[1] For an air arrival, investigate flights to Aktion/Preveza Airport (PVK). The airport’s official public-bus page names Lefkada among its bus destinations and links to KTEL Lefkadas. That establishes the airport–Lefkada transport option, not a service timed to every flight or a direct bus to your hotel. We could not qualify the current airport-route timetable in this check, so no departure, fare or protected connection is asserted. Arrange the arrival and final resort transfer together, using a taxi or other booked transfer if the dated bus does not fit.[5]

| Compare | Choose it for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lefkada Town | Town walks, meals and a starting point for the published local bus routes. | A town address is not the same as staying beside one of the west-coast beaches. |
| Nidri | A stay on the Lefkada–Lygia–Nikiana–Nidri bus corridor, with local evenings instead of repeated town transfers. | The published Nidri connection does not make Kathisma, Porto Katsiki or Egremni direct bus outings. |
| Agios Nikitas | A west-coast village stay with its own beach; investigate Mylos separately if that approach suits you. | The retrieved bus page lists weekday town connections but no weekend departures in those rows. Do not assume a frequent daily shuttle. |
| Vasiliki | Time around Vasiliki/Ponti bay, especially a windsurfing-led holiday. | It is a separate southern base. Choose it for local days, not for repeating journeys to town and the north. |
A car-free trip needs a narrower beach plan
KTEL Lefkadas publishes a Lefkada–Lygia–Nikiana–Nidri corridor, with separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday entries. That is the first corridor to examine if you want to move between a coastal base and town without renting a car. The Nidri directions also distinguish the town-hall stop from port departures; use the actual boarding point, not just the village name.[4] The same retrieved page is much less useful for an all-beaches itinerary. Agios Nikitas has weekday entries but blank Saturday and Sunday rows. The Kathisma beach section has headings but no listed departures in either direction. Blank rows do not prove that a service can never run; they do mean this page does not establish a usable trip on those days. Do not book accommodation around an assumed Kathisma shuttle.[4] Without a car, choose a base whose local days you would enjoy even if one excursion does not work. Price an arranged outing or taxi for a particular distant beach instead of expecting a chain of buses to cover the whole west coast. A car is useful for several dispersed areas, but not essential for a holiday that stays mainly around one base.
[4] KTEL Lefkadas: local routes and day-specific entriesWest-coast beaches: choose the access as well as the view
Kathisma suits readers looking for a beach with bars and restaurants. Agios Nikitas has its village beach, while nearby Mylos involves a walking approach or a boat option described by Visit Greece. Treat the Mylos journey as a separate access decision, especially with luggage, a buggy or limited mobility.[2] Porto Katsiki and Egremni are beach outings rather than interchangeable substitutes for an easy local swim. Visit Greece describes substantial stair approaches at both. Do not use a photograph or a road pin as proof that the final approach suits your party. A boat outing is a different product, dependent on its actual programme and operating conditions; the tourism page does not establish a departure on your date.[2] Choose one west-coast area for a day rather than adding all the named beaches to a town or east-coast outing. No current path opening, lifeguard coverage, beach fare or safe swimming condition is certified here.
[2] Visit Greece: Lefkada beaches and access differencesTown beaches and Vasiliki are different holiday choices
Kastro and Ammoglossa are near the mainland gateway and town. Agios Ioannis is a windsurfing and kitesurfing area, so it is worth distinguishing from a plan that simply seeks the calmest local swim. Lygia and Mikros Gialos are among the road-accessible beaches listed by Visit Greece; an accessible road does not by itself establish the final beach approach or working mobility equipment on your dates.[2] In the south, the municipality describes the Vasiliki beach extending towards Ponti and emphasises windsurfing. Choose that base because you want time around the bay or a suitable booked activity, not because a generic family-beach description guarantees calm water. The municipality’s general references to island ferries are not a current timetable.[3]
[3] Municipality of Lefkada: Vasiliki and Ponti bayA five-night first-visit outline
Arrival day: reach one base and keep the evening local. First full day: explore Lefkada Town and consider a nearby beach such as Kastro if conditions suit. Second full day: choose Agios Nikitas and its own beach, or a Kathisma outing with suitable transport. Third full day: make Vasiliki/Ponti the focus if its bay or an arranged windsurfing activity interests you; otherwise use a local day around your base. Fourth full day: choose one more beach outing or leave room to recover a weather-affected day. Depart after the fifth night. This is an editorial outline for a visitor with suitable transport, not a bus itinerary. From Nidri or Vasiliki, start with a day in that base and remove a distant journey. Porto Katsiki or Egremni can replace a west-coast day when the actual access and transport suit; they are not compulsory additions. For seven nights, add local days before adding another hotel.
When to go and what to budget
If swimming and beach facilities are the purpose of the holiday, choose dates only after matching the room, arrival transport and the outings you need. A quieter-season visit can work as a town-and-local-area stay, but a retained summer bus page or excursion description is not proof of later operation. The local timetable retrieved for this guide already showed important differences between the Nidri corridor and west-coast beach entries.[4] Build the budget from your actual accommodation quote, both airport or mainland transfers, car hire if needed, and the particular excursions you intend to take. We have not established a current room-price average or a fixed daily Lefkada budget. A beach-hopping itinerary and a week staying mainly around one bay have different transport costs.
Do not treat Lefkada as an operating through-ferry hub
Lefkada Palace’s website explicitly says its Ionian passenger-ferry line is “not currently operating”, despite retaining route cards for several islands. The notice was confirmed in the original live HTML on 25 October 2026. Do not turn those cards into a Corfu–Lefkada–Kefalonia itinerary or assume that a sightseeing cruise carries you onward with luggage for a hotel move.[10] A separately advertised crossing would need its own dated qualification, departure port, passenger or vehicle basis and onward land transfer. If no qualified connection fits, keep the nights on Lefkada. Road access solves the mainland arrival; it does not prove an onward sailing.
[10] Lefkada Palace: non-operating passenger-line noticeSources and limits
Official tourism, municipality, airport and local bus sources retrieved 25 October 2026. The airport’s general bus link was available, but its current KTEL airport timetable could not be qualified; no timetable or fare was substituted from a search snippet. The local bus extraction preserves the blank Kathisma rows and weekday-only Agios Nikitas entries. Beach descriptions establish geography and general access differences, not current path status or sea conditions. Suggested nights and day groupings are editorial recommendations.
