Zakynthos travel guide: beaches, arrivals and a five-night plan

Plan a Zakynthos holiday around one base, protected southern beaches and realistic transport. Compare resort styles, ferry arrivals and trips that do not depend on landing at Navagio.

Is Zakynthos right for your trip?

Zakynthos, also called Zante, suits a beach holiday with restaurants and excursions from one base. Choose Tsilivi for a developed beach resort, Kalamaki for sand beside the protected nesting coast, or Zakynthos Town for town evenings and ferry logistics. Laganas is the deliberate nightlife choice, not the default for everyone.

Allow five to seven nights if you want beach days plus a north-coast outing without changing accommodation. Three nights can work for one base and one excursion; it is a poor fit for a checklist covering both ends of the island. These are suggested holiday lengths, not a minimum imposed by transport.

Do not choose Zakynthos solely for the photograph of Shipwreck Beach. Navagio access is restricted, and a boat advertised with its name does not establish permission to land or swim there. The island needs to appeal to you even if that stop is unavailable.

Understand the island before choosing a base

Zakynthos Town and the main mainland-ferry port are on the east coast. Tsilivi lies north of town. Argassi is south of town on the approach towards the Vasilikos peninsula. Kalamaki and Laganas face the southern bay; Gerakas is farther along the southeastern peninsula.

The northern Agios Nikolaos harbour is a different departure point from the main town port. If a boat ticket names Agios Nikolaos, do not turn up at Zakynthos Town. Likewise, a trip departing Porto Vromi requires a west-coast transfer, not a short walk from an eastern resort. Group days by coast rather than crossing the island repeatedly.

Arriving by air: town bus or direct resort transfer?

The airport confirms a bus between the terminal and Zakynthos town, with the stop outside Arrivals. That establishes the town connection, not a direct airport bus to every resort. For Tsilivi, Kalamaki or a Vasilikos property, compare the complete journey: airport to town plus onward transport versus a direct transfer.

The linked KTEL timetable could not be retrieved for this guide’s 25 October 2026 check. No bus time or fare is therefore quoted. If you want a car-free stay, budget for an arrival transfer unless you have a date-specific bus journey that reaches your accommodation. Airport proximity alone does not prove a walkable route or a direct bus.

Arriving by ferry: Kyllini, not Piraeus

Levante Ferries publishes the mainland route between Kyllini and Zakynthos. Kyllini is on the western Peloponnese; it is not one of the Athens ports. An Athens-to-Zakynthos overland journey therefore needs a mainland road or coach leg before the crossing. Do not book an Athens-port transfer expecting a direct ferry from Piraeus.

The operator currently publishes separate October 2026 and winter tables, with winter dates from 1 November 2026 to 28 April 2027. Sundays and named holidays have exceptions; 28 October 2026 follows the Sunday/holiday pattern. The dated table is the useful reference, not a generic claim about daily frequency. This guide does not extend those departures beyond their stated period or quote an unverified fare.

For an Ionian combination, price and time the exact second-island transfer before committing to rooms. This mainland route is not evidence of a direct Zakynthos–Corfu or Zakynthos–Lefkada sailing. A one-island week avoids spending a holiday day repositioning through mainland ports.

Beaches and turtles: what changes the day plan

Kalamaki and the eastern Laganas shore are nesting beaches, as are Gerakas, Dafni and Marathonisi. ARCHELON identifies Sekania as an absolute-protection area where public access is not allowed. It is not an extra beach to add to a driving route.

On the visitor-accessible nesting beaches, ARCHELON gives visiting hours of 07:00 until sunset and asks visitors to keep beach activity within five metres of the waterline. Stay away from marked nests, leave hatchlings to reach the sea themselves, and remove rubbish. A late dinner in a resort does not mean its nesting beach remains open for a night walk.

For turtle observation by boat, use ARCHELON’s practical criteria: no feeding, touching or swimming with turtles; observation vessels keep at least 15 metres from the animal, and viewing is limited to ten minutes. Its voluntary code allows a maximum of two vessels observing one turtle at a time. Do not book on the strength of a guaranteed close encounter.

Navagio and boat trips: do not promise a beach landing

LiFO’s 1 June 2026 report on the government decision describes a ban on beach access and swimming within the Navagio bay, with tightly restricted boat approach. It also describes the upper viewing platform as conditional on protective works, not unconditionally open. This is attributed reporting: the underlying Gazette document was not independently retrieved for this guide.

Accordingly, this plan includes neither a Navagio landing nor a cliff-edge walk. A north-coast boat day can still be considered, but read the actual programme: departure harbour, transfer, permitted viewing area, alternative stops and weather cancellation terms. A Blue Caves outing and a full-island cruise are different uses of a day. Choose one rather than booking overlapping trips because both mention Shipwreck.

For a 2027 visit, do not infer reopening from the end of a 2026 restriction period. Until current access is established, keep Gerakas, your local resort beach and town time as the usable core of the holiday.

A five-night Zakynthos plan

Day 1: transfer to your chosen base, settle in and eat nearby. If you arrive by ferry and stay in town, use the evening for the waterfront and Solomos Square rather than an immediate excursion. Overnight in the same base throughout this plan.

Day 2: make this a full local beach day in Tsilivi or Kalamaki. From a town base, choose one beach transfer instead of moving between several resorts. On nesting beaches, leave by sunset.

Day 3: visit Zakynthos Town and, if you want the hilltop view, Bochali. Keep a separate transfer allowance for the uphill section; a map placing it near town is not proof of an easy level walk. A car-free traveller can make this the main non-beach day.

Day 4: with a car or arranged excursion, visit the Vasilikos side and Gerakas during permitted visiting hours. Without one, repeat a local beach day or choose a transfer-inclusive outing. Do not add Sekania.

Day 5: reserve one weather-dependent north-coast boat outing, or stay on land and use the day for a second beach and town meal. The plan does not require a Navagio landing. Avoid placing the only desired boat excursion on a tightly timed departure morning.

Day 6: travel out. For a mainland ferry, work backwards from the correct Kyllini connection and the onward road journey; for a flight, arrange the resort-to-airport leg separately. This is editorial pacing, not a transport package.

When to go and what to budget

For a beach-led visit, start by comparing June and September with the busier midsummer period. For an autumn or winter stay, town is a more practical starting point than assuming every beach-resort restaurant, excursion and bus remains available. The published winter ferry table demonstrates a mainland connection, not full resort operation.

Build the budget from your actual room quote, airport or port transfer, daily food, and the one excursion you intend to take. Add car hire only for the days you genuinely need it, including parking and the collection/return arrangement. There is no useful single daily price that covers both a walkable resort week and a remote villa with a car.
