Where to stay in Zakynthos: town, Tsilivi, Kalamaki or Laganas?

Choose a Zakynthos base by beach access, nightlife and transport. Compare seven areas, including Argassi, Alykes and Vasilikos, without assuming every resort works car-free.

The best base depends on the holiday you want

For a first beach holiday without a rental car, start with a centrally located room in Tsilivi or Kalamaki and arrange the airport transfer. Choose Zakynthos Town if restaurants, town walks and the main ferry port matter more than staying beside a long sandy beach. Choose central Laganas only if its late-night scene is part of the attraction.

Alykes is worth comparing for quieter evenings; Argassi for a developed resort near town; Vasilikos for a stay centred on the southeastern beaches with a car or prearranged transport. None is automatically best for everyone. A cheap room on a remote hillside can cost more overall once daily taxis are included.

Zakynthos Town: choose the port and evening walk first

Stay in town for a short ferry-connected visit or a holiday where meals and an evening walk matter every day. Solomos Square and the waterfront give you a clear accommodation search area. Check the actual walking route from the ferry berth, rather than treating every property with a town address as port-side.

Bochali is up the hill behind town. A room there can suit someone wanting the view and using taxis or a car; it is a different choice from a level waterfront base. Do not book a hill property expecting the same luggage walk as a central hotel.

Town is also the sensible first search for a visit outside the beach-resort season, but the trade-off remains: your main swimming beach may require a separate journey. If you want beach access before breakfast, compare Tsilivi or Kalamaki instead.

Tsilivi and Planos: the first comparison for a beach-resort week

Tsilivi is also marketed as Planos. The local resort guide places it north of Zakynthos Town and describes a substantial choice of restaurants, bars and accommodation. It suits a week where most meals and beach time happen within the same resort rather than on a different excursion every day.

Search by the actual beach entrance and restaurant cluster you intend to use. Names such as Tragaki, Bouka or Gaidaros can appear in the wider Tsilivi search area; do not assume an outlying listing has the same walk as a room in the centre. For a family or anyone avoiding late-night noise, compare the room’s position against bars and road access, not just its distance from the sea.

A central stay can reduce everyday transport needs, but does not solve the arrival transfer or a north-coast excursion. Treat buses as an extra option once their dates are established, rather than the reason to book a room whose beach and dinner require them.

Kalamaki: southern sand with a protected-beach routine

Kalamaki is a useful alternative to Laganas for a southern beach holiday with restaurants and bars but without choosing the main club strip. The local guide identifies its sandy beach and location close to the airport. Aircraft noise is therefore worth checking in recent room reviews if you are a light sleeper; short transfer distance is not the same as quiet.

There are two walking journeys to assess: room to beach and room to dinner. A room near the restaurant road is not necessarily right on the sand. For a stroller or limited mobility, establish the surface and gradients on both routes and any steps at the property.

Kalamaki is a nesting beach. ARCHELON’s guidance allows visits from 07:00 until sunset, with beach activity kept within five metres of the waterline. Plan evening walks along resort streets rather than on the nesting sand. Do not treat the protected status as a promise of turtle sightings.

Laganas: book it for nightlife, not by accident

Visit Greece identifies Laganas as the island’s main nightlife centre, with clubs and venues staying open into the early hours. A central room works for travellers who want to walk home from that scene. It is the wrong saving if you will spend each night trying to sleep through it.

The beach, the club strip and an outlying apartment are not interchangeable locations. Inspect the exact room position before assuming that a broad Laganas address means either quiet or easy nightlife access. Compare Kalamaki for less intense evenings instead of booking central Laganas and hoping the room faces the right way.

The eastern nesting shore also has conservation restrictions. A nightlife resort does not make every adjoining stretch of beach available after dark.

Argassi: resort facilities near town

Argassi is south of Zakynthos Town, with restaurants, bars and accommodation along the coastal resort. It is a reasonable comparison if you want evening choice in a resort but expect to visit town or the Vasilikos side as well. The local resort guide places it close to the main port, though that is not evidence of a pleasant walk with luggage.

Choose the property for its immediate surroundings and beach access, not a generic seafront description. If a broad sandy beach on your doorstep is the central requirement, compare the actual shoreline with Tsilivi and Kalamaki before paying. Likewise, proximity to town is not a verified late-night bus service: include a return taxi allowance if town dinners are part of your plan.

Alykes or Vasilikos: quieter evenings or a southeast beach stay?

Alykes is the northern resort choice to compare when quieter evenings are the priority; Visit Greece distinguishes it from the louder southern nightlife centres. It suits staying locally for meals and beach time. It is less convenient if every day’s plan starts in the southern bay or at the main town port.

Vasilikos is a broader southeast accommodation area rather than a promise of one walkable village centre. Pick the specific beach and nearby dinner options before selecting a property. It is a better fit for someone arranging a car or transfers than for a traveller hoping to improvise daily bus trips between scattered beaches.

If Gerakas is the attraction, remember that its nesting-beach access ends at sunset. Do not pay extra on the assumption that you can use the sand after dark. Sekania is not a public alternative beach.

How to choose a room without a car

Shortlist a central Tsilivi or Kalamaki room with a usable beach and dinner walk, then compare it with town plus separate beach outings. The airport confirms a bus to Zakynthos Town, but that is not a direct link to each resort. Its KTEL timetable link could not be retrieved for the 25 October 2026 check, so this guide does not claim a frequency, late return or fare.

Before paying, locate the exact entrance and establish four journeys: arrival with luggage, everyday beach access, dinner after dark and departure. For a hillside villa or an outlying Vasilikos room, cost those transfers before comparing the room price. A car-free resort holiday is workable as a local stay with arranged outings; a different remote beach every day is another transport budget.

For families, compare kitchen access, shade, room-to-beach steps and the sleeping arrangement rather than relying on a resort-wide family label. For limited mobility, obtain property-specific access details: no area in this guide is certified step-free.
