Ikaria travel guide: where to stay and which port to use

Choose the Armenistis–Gialiskari area for northern beaches, Evdilos for a northern-port stay, or Agios Kirykos and Therma for the southeast. Match the base to the exact ferry port.

Is Ikaria a good choice for you?

Ikaria suits a trip built around one part of the island, beach days and village evenings. It is less suitable as a one-night sightseeing stop: the port, the room and the places you want to visit may be in different areas. Choose the northern beach villages if that is the holiday you want, or the southeast for Agios Kirykos and Therma. Allow four or five nights as an editorial starting point, longer if you want unhurried days on both sides. The island’s longevity reputation is not a health benefit a holiday can promise.

Your decisionWhy choose itWhat it does not solve
Armenistis / GialiskariA northern beach stay around Livadi and Mesakti, with village meals nearby.Neither is the same place as Evdilos ferry port; arrange the onward transfer.
EvdilosA harbour-town stay if your ferry uses the northern port.Being beside the port does not put every northern beach within an easy walk.
Agios KirykosThe southeastern town and a stay built around its own ferry arrival. It is not an interchangeable arrival for a room in the northern beach villages.
ThermaA stay specifically focused on the spa village near Agios Kirykos.Current bath opening, admission and personal suitability need separate confirmation.
Christos RachonVillage evenings and time in the inland Raches area.It is not a beach-front or ferry-terminal base.

Evdilos and Agios Kirykos are separate ports

Blue Star names two ports on Ikaria: Evdilos and Agios Kirykos. Search and book the actual port, then tell the accommodation which one appears on your ticket. If the convenient departure lands at the other port, compare the whole transfer before buying it. For a late arrival, arrange collection and room access rather than assuming the bus or a taxi will be waiting. The national tourism authority also lists an Athens air connection; it does not establish a direct Samos–Ikaria flight or a particular flight on your travel date.

Northern days: Armenistis, Livadi and Mesakti

Make the Armenistis–Gialiskari coast the focus if you want repeated beach days without changing accommodation. Livadi and Mesakti are northern sandy-beach choices; the tourism authority also identifies Armenistis as an established visitor base. Christos Rachon offers a different village outing, with late-opening shops described by Visit Greece. Do not turn that description into a promise that every restaurant stays open all night. Choose one beach and a village visit for the day rather than scheduling both coasts around a fixed evening meal.

Southeastern days: Agios Kirykos, Therma and Faros

Use Agios Kirykos for the town and harbour, then make Therma a separate nearby visit if the baths are part of your plans. Faros provides another southeastern beach area and is associated with the Drakano tower. This grouping is an editorial way to reduce backtracking, not a timed tour. A spa village’s existence does not establish current bath hours, accessibility or medical suitability; this guide makes no therapeutic claim and does not include unverified admission costs.

Seychelles beach needs a separate access decision

Seychelles is on the south coast and is reached by a footpath or boat according to the national tourism authority. Blue Star describes the walking approach as steep and the beach as lacking tourist amenities. Treat it as an outing that needs appropriate footwear, water and a workable return, not a guaranteed easy beach stop. A boat option mentioned in a destination guide is not confirmation of a boat operating on your date. Choose an easier-access beach near your base if the descent or uncertain boat return would make the day unsuitable.

Car-free travel and village festivals

Without a car, choose the part of Ikaria where you want to spend most days and budget for a confirmed arrival transfer. A current island-wide bus timetable was not established for this guide, so it does not rely on buses to connect a late ferry, a remote beach or a night out in Raches. The panigyria are village festivals, not a performance guaranteed every evening. Use a dated local announcement for the particular event and settle the return transport before committing to a distant village night.

Samos and Fourni: keep the ports in the plan

Blue Star lists Samos and Fourni among connections from Ikaria. A useful next step is to compare a Samos arrival at Karlovasi or Vathy with the Ikaria departure actually offered; do not assume every connection uses Evdilos. The operator’s 13 October 2026 cancellation notice specifically names Agios Kirykos on the Samos–Fourni corridor. That is dated disruption evidence, not today’s timetable. Book the onward journey and the final exit before locking a string of non-refundable rooms, and keep a buffer before a separate flight.
