How to use this Samos and Ikaria itinerary
Allow ten days for four nights on Samos, four on Ikaria and one at your onward gateway. Use thirteen days if you want two nights on Fourni and five on Ikaria, plus the same gateway night. These are suggested allocations: move the transfer days to the actual sailings before booking rooms. With only a week including international travel, choose one island rather than spending much of the trip changing ports.
Route order and the ferry evidence
The simple route is Samos → Ikaria → your onward gateway; the longer version inserts Fourni between the two islands. Blue Star’s Fourni guide names both Samos and Ikaria as connections. Its disruption notice updated 15 October 2026 also names the Agios Kirykos–Fourni–Karlovasi–Vathy corridor in a cancelled 13 October sailing. That establishes the corridor and the possibility of disruption, not a departure for your holiday. No daily frequency, winter pattern, next-summer schedule or current fare is assumed here.

10 days · 9 nights
Four Samos nights, four Ikaria nights, then one gateway night. Reverse the order if your actual flights and ferry dates work better that way; recheck each directed leg.
- Day 1
Arrive on Samos and settle in Pythagorio
Keep arrival day local: check in, walk the harbour and organise the next day’s archaeological visit. Pythagorio suits this first part of the trip; it is not the same place as the main ferry ports of Vathy and Karlovasi. An evening ferry arrival may make a first night at the actual port more practical.
Overnight: Samos
- Day 2
Pythagorio and the Heraion
Use the day for Pythagorio’s archaeological setting and the Heraion near Ireon. Plan visits around the sites’ actual admission sessions, rather than assuming every monument and tunnel is open on the same ticket or timetable. Return to the same base instead of moving accommodation.
Overnight: Samos
- Day 3
Kokkari and the north coast
Make Kokkari the focus of a north-coast outing. Choose a beach stop according to wind and sea conditions; keep time in the village if swimming is unsuitable. This is a separate excursion from the southern archaeological day, not an extra stop squeezed between museum visits.
Overnight: Samos
- Day 4
A spare Samos day, then prepare for the correct port
Choose Vathy for a town day or stay near Pythagorio for another beach afternoon. If tomorrow’s booked ferry leaves Karlovasi early, consider spending this final night there. Arrange a transfer to the port printed on the ticket, not simply to “Samos port”.
Overnight: Samos
- Day 5
Samos to Ikaria: use the sailing that actually exists
Reserve this day for the crossing and the road transfer after arrival. Match Karlovasi or Vathy on Samos with Agios Kirykos or Evdilos on Ikaria before fixing accommodation. The southeastern version of this plan uses Agios Kirykos/Therma; an Evdilos arrival may justify a northern base instead.
Overnight: Ikaria
- Day 6
Agios Kirykos and Therma
From a southeastern base, spend a day around Agios Kirykos and nearby Therma. The thermal-spring setting is a reason to visit the area, not a promise that a bath is operating or medically suitable. A café and coastal walk remain useful alternatives.
Overnight: Ikaria
- Day 7
Choose one northern excursion
If you have suitable transport, use one day for the northern coast around Evdilos, then decide whether to continue towards Armenistis. Do not combine every distant beach with a cross-island drive and an evening ferry. Without a car, replace this with a shorter excursion for which you have arranged a return.
Overnight: Ikaria
- Day 8
Leave a day for the part of Ikaria you actually enjoy
Return to a favourite coastal area or arrange a village outing. Christos Rachon suits an evening only when you have a return transfer; its late-opening reputation is not evidence of a bus home. Keep exposed beach plans flexible.
Overnight: Ikaria
- Day 9
Leave Ikaria for your onward gateway
End the island stay today and overnight where your next independently booked departure starts. For an Athens flight, this means reaching Athens today by a confirmed flight or ferry and sleeping there. A nominal buffer on Ikaria does not protect an Athens departure.
Overnight: Onward gateway, normally Athens
- Day 10
Continue home or extend the mainland stay
Continue from the gateway where you slept. If the available Ikaria service does not reach that gateway on day 9, move the island departure earlier or extend the trip; do not pretend the fixed ten-day version works on every date.
When Fourni earns the extra crossing
Fourni is worth adding when you want a small harbour-based stay and a full day without a long drive. Stay in Fourni Town for this short visit; Kampi gives the day a nearby focus, while Petrokopio is a separate quarry-and-coast outing. Keep Fourni out if the boats force a one-night stop, leave too little time on Ikaria, or require a risky same-day connection to your flight. Adding nights is better than treating it as a compulsory tick-box.

Agios Kirykos/Therma suits the southeastern days in this plan and an Agios Kirykos arrival. A northern stay around Evdilos or Armenistis suits northern beaches and Raches better, but changes the road transfer if the ferry calls at Agios Kirykos. Keep one Ikaria base for four nights unless moving it solves a real arrival or departure problem. The itinerary deliberately leaves out a summit hike or difficult beach descent as a routine transfer-day activity.
Visit Greece: Ikaria villages and island geographySeason and booking order
For a beach-led trip, start with warmer-season travel dates, then qualify the actual transport. Spring or autumn can suit village and archaeological days, but neither a summer route map nor an October cancellation supplies your dates. In winter, treat the island stay as a different trip with specific lodging and transport arrangements rather than shrinking this beach itinerary. Secure entry to the region, the Samos–Ikaria leg or both Fourni legs, the final island exit and local port transfers before making rooms non-refundable.
What to include in the budget
Price all nine nights for the shorter route or twelve for the longer one, including the gateway night. Add arrival travel, each inter-island ticket, the island exit, baggage or vehicle charges where applicable, and transfers on both sides of every port. Add archaeological admission and any local car hire separately. With hire cars, arrange island-specific collection and return unless the rental contract explicitly permits the ferry crossing; a vehicle space on a ferry does not grant rental permission. No hotel rate or ferry fare is quoted as current.
If the dates do not line up
Try reversing Samos and Ikaria first, checking the reverse-direction sailing rather than assuming symmetry. Next remove Fourni. If the core crossing still consumes too much of the holiday, keep Samos for archaeological and coastal days or Ikaria for a slower single-island stay. Do not attach Samothrace to this route merely because it belongs to the same broad island group.
