Is Samothrace right for your trip?
Choose Samothrace for archaeology, mountain scenery and a stay centred on villages and the northern coast. It is less suitable if your priority is a succession of easy sandy resort beaches or a quick addition to Samos and Ikaria. Plan it through Alexandroupoli on the Thracian mainland, with the ferry arriving at Kamariotissa. Four island nights is a useful starting allocation, plus whatever mainland nights your arrival and departure require.
Visit Greece: Samothrace landscape and mainland accessGetting to Samothrace: Alexandroupoli to Kamariotissa
Reach Alexandroupoli first, then transfer to its port for the ferry to Kamariotissa. Visit Greece describes the air approach via Alexandroupolis airport and onward ferry, not a flight onto Samothrace. Fast Ferries advertises Alexandroupoli–Samothrace and names Kamariotissa as the island port. Book the two travel stages as separate commitments unless your seller explicitly provides a protected connection; an airport arrival is not a ferry check-in.
Fast Ferries: Samothrace access and Kamariotissa portDo not turn a route listing into a timetable
Use Fast Ferries’ dated booking results for both the outward and return journey. Its destination page also advertises links with Lemnos and Agios Efstratios, but does not establish which dates work for a multi-island holiday. A generic route page or an old Zante Ferries timetable is not proof of the current vessel, frequency or fare. No current departure times or ticket prices are assumed in this guide. For an independently booked onward flight, leave the island before flight day and sleep on the mainland where practical.
Kamariotissa, Chora or Therma?

| Your decision | Why stay here | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Kamariotissa | Best starting choice for ferry arrival, departure and keeping luggage transfers simple. | You still need transport for Chora, the sanctuary and the northern villages; the port is not the same place as the capital. |
| Chora / Hora | Choose the inland capital for village streets and evenings below the mountain. | You need a road transfer from the ferry and separate travel to beaches; do not book it as a waterfront base. |
| Therma | Choose the northern side for a stay focused on its wooded surroundings, springs and nearby coastal outings. | You must organise arrival from Kamariotissa and onward trips; a spring-side location is not proof that a bath is open. |
How to choose a base without a car
For a first short visit without your own transport, favour Kamariotissa if ferry logistics matter most. Choose Therma only once you have arranged the port transfer and a workable return from the places you want to visit. Chora suits village evenings, but adds a transfer to each coastal day. This guide does not assume an hourly bus, a late-night return or a seasonal timetable continuing into winter; compare the total transfer cost with the room saving before booking.
Fast Ferries: Kamariotissa, Chora and ThermaPaleopoli and the Sanctuary of the Great Gods
Give the sanctuary its own visit rather than squeezing it into a hurried ferry turnaround. The archaeological interest is the sanctuary itself and the ancient religious rites associated with it. The original Winged Victory of Samothrace is in the Louvre in Paris, not waiting in the island museum. Keep admission, museum opening and any combined ticket as a separate current check before choosing your visit day; a tourism description does not supply today’s opening hours.
Visit Greece: the sanctuary and the Winged VictoryBeaches: choose Pachia Ammos for sand
Pachia Ammos is the straightforward named choice when you want a sandy beach day. Therma and the shore by Fonias are pebbled alternatives on the northern side. Decide the beach day by the actual weather and your road transport rather than treating every shore as interchangeable. Fast Ferries lists Kremasto Nero waterfall as boat-access only: do not plan a casual drive-and-walk visit there or assume that an excursion will operate on your dates.
Fast Ferries: beaches and boat-only Kremasto NeroWaterfalls and mountain outings need a separate decision
The vathres are natural pools in the island’s stream-and-waterfall landscape. Their presence in a destination guide does not establish safe access, safe swimming or an easy route to upper waterfalls. For a visit involving gorge travel, climbing, canyoning or Mount Saos, arrange appropriate local professional guidance and current conditions separately. This short-stay plan does not give an upper-gorge route, a summit duration or permission to ignore closures. Keep the sanctuary and village day as alternatives when an outdoor outing is unsuitable.
Visit Greece: mountain, streams and natural poolsA five-day outline with four island nights
Day 1: arrive at Kamariotissa, settle in and keep the afternoon local. Day 2: visit Paleopoli’s sanctuary, with museum time only if its opening is confirmed. Day 3: use Chora for a village day; add a northern coastal visit only if the transport works. Day 4: choose Pachia Ammos for a sandy beach outing, or Therma and a locally arranged nature outing instead. Day 5: leave from Kamariotissa on your booked ferry. These are editorial day allocations, not a claim that ferries run at convenient times on all five days. Add a mainland night before or after when the actual connections require it.
When to go and what to book
For a swim-led stay, choose warmer-season dates, but keep a non-swimming alternative. Spring and autumn can suit archaeology and village time; rainfall or poor conditions may change stream and mountain plans. Winter requires a specifically arranged stay rather than assumed summer services. First secure both ferry directions and mainland connections, then accommodation and local transport. Price the ferry, mainland overnights, port transfers, island room, road outings and admissions separately; no universal daily budget is credible without those actual choices.
