Aegina travel guide: day trips, bases and getting around

Choose Aegina Town for a car-free first visit, Agia Marina for a beach stay or Perdika for a village base. Plan the right arrival port and a usable day trip.

Is Aegina worth visiting from Athens?

Aegina suits a short Athens break when you want an island harbour, food shops and an archaeological visit without committing to a Cyclades circuit. Aegina Town is the simplest first stop: the main ferry port is in the town, so you can start exploring on foot. Choose an overnight stay if the Temple of Aphaia and time at the beach matter as much as the harbour. Do not confuse an easy arrival with an island you can see entirely on foot. Aphaia, Agios Nektarios and Perdika require onward transport from the main port. If you have only a day and do not want to organise a bus or taxi, keep the visit in Aegina Town and around Kolona instead.

Which Aegina port should you book?

For a walking day trip, select Aegina Town, also described as Aegina's main port. Souvala is on the north coast and Agia Marina is on the east coast; neither is an interchangeable arrival for a hotel or day plan in town. Match both tickets to the port you intend to use. Saronic Ferries advertises a year-round Piraeus–Aegina Town service. Its standard journey is about 1 hour 10 minutes, but its dated departures can take longer: the displayed 24 October 2026 list includes both 70-minute and 85-minute crossings. Use the duration attached to the sailing you buy, rather than treating the destination headline as a fixed timetable. The operator identifies Piraeus Gate E8 for its Aegina service. Follow your ticket and current port instructions, including the boarding deadline. From central Athens or the airport, allow separately for reaching Piraeus and walking to the vessel; the crossing duration starts at the port, not your hotel.

One day on Aegina without a car

Arrive at Aegina Town's main port and begin with Kolona if you want an archaeological visit and its opening hours fit your arrival. This is the Temple of Apollo site near town, not the Temple of Aphaia on the other side of the island. Then return along the waterfront for lunch. Spend the afternoon on Aphaias Street and the adjoining town lanes, with time for pistachio shops and the harbour. Stay within easy reach of your return departure rather than adding Perdika late in the day. This is a suggested walking sequence, not a guided tour or a promise that a museum will be open. If Aphaia is the reason for your trip, replace part of the town afternoon with a pre-arranged out-and-back transfer. Establish the return leg before leaving the port. Adding Aphaia, Agios Nektarios, Perdika and a beach to the same short day creates several separate journeys; choose one excursion instead.

Two nights: add Aphaia and a beach without rushing

A useful two-night plan is to arrive in Aegina Town on the first day, walk the harbour and have dinner without a return-ferry deadline. Use the full second day for the Temple of Aphaia and Agia Marina, with your transport arranged as a return journey. Reserve the departure day for town or Kolona before the ferry. These are editorial pacing suggestions, not minimum stays. Agios Nektarios and Paleochora form a different cultural outing. Choose that focus instead of automatically adding it to the Aphaia-and-beach day. Perdika makes another alternative for a village lunch. Moni requires an additional local boat and a workable return; do not build the last afternoon around an unconfirmed connection.

Do you need a car?

You do not need a car for Aegina Town and the nearby Kolona area if those walking distances suit you. For island excursions, arrange a taxi or establish the actual local bus service before committing to the route. This guide does not give an unverified bus frequency, fare or final departure. A rental car or a vehicle brought on an eligible conventional ferry gives more flexibility for several villages, but adds rental or vehicle-ticket costs. It is unnecessary for a town-only day. If you have mobility needs or are travelling with a buggy, ask the accommodation about the complete path from the ferry, entrance steps and room access rather than relying on a town-centre address.

Seasons and costs that matter for this trip

The Piraeus connection and a town-based visit make Aegina a candidate outside the summer beach season. That does not mean every beach business, excursion boat or peripheral accommodation operates year-round. For a cooler-season trip, favour a town base and cultural visits over a plan dependent on beach facilities. For a day trip, price the return passenger tickets plus meals and any admission or excursion transport. For an overnight, add the actual room quote and the transfer to your chosen base. A beach-base deal can lose its advantage if it requires repeated taxis. We do not quote a single island-wide daily budget or present the operator's minimum-price card as your booked fare.
