Athens ferry ports: Piraeus, Rafina or Lavrio?

Piraeus has airport rail and express-bus links; Rafina uses a regional bus; Lavrio involves a regional-bus change at Markopoulo. The correct port is the one named on your ferry booking.

These are separate departure points

Do not book a transfer to “Athens port”. Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio are distinct gateways, and a ticket from one cannot be boarded at another. Choose an actual sailing for your island and date first, then compare the full airport or city-to-vessel journey. A shorter crossing does not automatically give you the easier arrival day.

Piraeus: rail and X96 are different options

Athens airport lists Metro Line 3 to Piraeus station, suburban railway to Piraeus and the X96 express bus. Its indicative journey times are about 60, 65 and 90 minutes respectively. These are transport estimates, not flight-to-ferry minimum connection times. Add waiting time, airport exit formalities and the journey to your actual vessel. Use Piraeus station when following the airport’s port directions; do not automatically stay on until the line’s Dimotiko Theatro terminus.

Airport rail works from 25 October 2026

From 25 October 2026, STASY announces Sunday–Thursday evening works on Line 3. Five stations between Ethniki Amyna and Halandri close from 21:40, and the central and airport sections are linked by replacement bus X25 between Katehaki and Doukissis Plakentias. The notice lists the last through airport departure towards the city at 21:10; later airport trains terminate at Doukissis Plakentias. Do not read the older last-train table further down the same page as a promise of a direct late-evening airport train. For a late arrival, compare the 24-hour X95 to Syntagma or X96 to Piraeus with the rail-and-replacement-bus journey. The works notice gives a start date, not a verified end date.

Rafina: use the named regional-bus service

The airport identifies a KTEL regional bus connection to Rafina. It is a different service from X96. Check the current regional timetable against your landing time before treating a same-day ferry as workable. The airport’s own page gives conflicting pickup descriptions: the general regional-bus section names outside Exit 5, while the port section names the area between Exits 2 and 3. Follow current airport signage or staff directions rather than relying on either description as a permanent stop location.

Lavrio: allow for a change at Markopoulo

The airport’s public-transport instructions route you via Markopoulo, changing there to the Lavrio regional bus. The port section explicitly warns of sparse services available only during daytime. That makes the timetable and connection more consequential than a simple distance comparison. If a late flight does not fit those services, arrange a confirmed alternative transfer or an overnight before the ferry. Do not budget this journey as one uninterrupted airport bus.

For the Paros and Naxos route, start by searching Piraeus

Blue Star’s dated early-October 2026 notice includes Piraeus–Paros–Naxos sailings. That makes Piraeus a documented starting point to investigate for this site’s first-trip route. The same notice lists a Lavrio–Kea–Kythnos–Syros sailing; it does not make Lavrio interchangeable with Piraeus for Paros or Naxos. These are historical route examples, not today’s timetable. Compare any other offered Athens gateway only after confirming the exact island, date and direction.

If you are staying in Athens first

Plan from your hotel address rather than reusing an airport-transfer estimate. Check the journey to the correct port, then the gate or vessel location within it. For an early departure, compare a city-centre night with a port-area night using the actual morning transport options. A hotel advertised as “Athens” or “near the port” is not proof that its door is a short walk from your ship.

Keep airport and ferry bookings separate in the plan

A landing time is not the time you can reach the bus or train. A transport estimate is not a guaranteed arrival at the boarding ramp. Include passport control and baggage if applicable, transport waiting time, gate access and the ferry company’s boarding requirement. If the margin is fragile, stay overnight. For the journey home, returning to the Athens area the day before an important flight reduces dependence on one crossing but cannot remove all disruption risk.

Check tickets and boarding next

Once the port is correct, verify the vessel, collection method and operator’s boarding instructions.

Athens to Naxos: plan through to your accommodation

Start with a dated departure from the specified Athens-area port, then include the journey to the ship and the transfer from Naxos Town to Chora or the beach corridor. The route guide separates these legs and gives a clearly dated crossing example.

Athens to Paros: arrive at Parikia

Book Paros as the island destination and arrange any Naoussa, Lefkes or east-coast transfer from Parikia. A late ferry can miss the last suitable bus even when the sea crossing is shorter.

Add city time or a practical overnight

Choose your Athens nights around actual full sightseeing days and the next departure. A central city stay and a port-area overnight solve different problems.
