Who should choose Leros?
Choose Leros for a smaller Dodecanese stay built around harbour villages, swimming and twentieth-century history. Agia Marina, Platanos and Panteli give you different sides of the central settlement area; Lakki adds Italian-era town planning and a separate harbour. Our starting recommendation is three or four nights, leaving two or three full days between arrival and departure. That is editorial pacing, not a minimum stay. Leros is less useful if you mainly want Rhodes’s medieval city, a large resort strip or a succession of famous archaeological sites.
Discover Greece: Leros settlements, castle and museumsAgia Marina, Platanos or Panteli?
Agia Marina suits a harbour-led stay with town walks and an evening waterfront. Platanos is the inland, elevated settlement associated with the castle and windmills: choose it for the town setting, not because a hilltop address makes swimming or rolling luggage easier. Panteli is the fishing-village choice for spending more of the day beside a small bay and returning to waterfront restaurants. These places form a useful sightseeing cluster, but an address described simply as central Leros does not tell you the slope or the route back after dinner. Compare the actual approach to your room before booking.

Choose Lakki when Italian-era architecture and wartime history are central to the visit. It is a separate base rather than another name for Agia Marina, and staying there changes your daily journeys to the castle-side villages. For a beach-focused search, compare Panteli with Vromolithos, Krithoni or Xirokampos; Discover Greece lists these among the island’s beaches. Decide which beach you want to use repeatedly before comparing rooms. A remote bay can be a good swimming base and a poor choice for evenings in Agia Marina without arranged transport.
Discover Greece: Leros settlements, castle and museumsA practical three-day visit
Use the first full day for Agia Marina, Platanos and the Castle of Panagia area. Keep the uphill part separate from any long beach outing, especially in hot weather. Use the second day for Lakki’s architecture and the War Museum, then leave time beside Lakki’s harbour. On a third full day, choose one swimming area rather than touring every beach: Panteli or Vromolithos works for an eastern-coast focus, while Xirokampos gives the day a southern focus. Bellenis Tower is an alternative museum priority. These are suggested day groupings; the destination source establishes the sights, not current museum opening hours, admission prices or guaranteed access.
Discover Greece: Leros settlements, castle and museumsLeros has two ferry ports: do not assume Lakki
The Municipal Port Fund identifies Lakki and Agia Marina as separate ports. More importantly, Blue Star’s still-published notice says its vessels have called at Agia Marina instead of Lakki from 8 November 2025 because of construction, until the works are completed. That notice does not give a completion date. Do not tell a driver to meet a Blue Star arrival at Lakki merely because an older guide calls it the main port. Give your accommodation the operator, vessel, date and berth stated in the current sailing instructions. The notice is specific evidence of a change, not proof that every company uses the same berth.
Blue Star Ferries: Agia Marina instead of Lakki noticeArriving by air or continuing from Kos
Visit Greece lists an Athens–Leros air connection. Compare that with flying into Kos only after including the Kos airport-to-port transfer and a separately timed ferry. Dodekanisos Seaways’ 26 October 2026 itinerary showed Kos, Kalymnos, Leros, Lipsi and Patmos in the northbound order; its 31 October listing also showed Patmos–Leros–Kalymnos–Kos southbound. These dated examples establish useful corridor choices, not daily frequency or next summer’s schedule. Staying on Leros is different from catching a few minutes ashore at an intermediate port.
Dodekanisos Seaways: dated ferry itinerariesGetting around and choosing the season
You can organise a stay around one village cluster without hiring a car for every day, but the island’s separate bays make repeated cross-island trips a different proposition. Arrange the arrival transfer and any Lakki or southern-beach outing as actual journeys rather than assuming a frequent island-wide bus. A room near dinner and your preferred swimming place reduces that dependence. For a swimming-led trip, use the broader season guide to choose the month, then resolve the dated ferry and local transport. The October and November ferry examples do not establish a full winter or future-summer service.
