Kos travel guide: beaches, Kos Town and getting around

Choose Kos for a beach holiday with a walkable historic town and several distinct resort areas. Base in Kos Town for sightseeing and car-free variety, or choose a coast first and plan excursions around it.

Is Kos right for your trip?

Kos suits travellers who want to combine beach time with ancient sites, restaurants and some independent exploring. It is a practical choice when part of the group wants a resort and others want more than a week beside the hotel pool. Kos Town concentrates the harbour, old town and several archaeological areas; the western beaches and villages need a separate outing.

Choose a smaller island instead if your priority is a compact harbour village with little resort development. Choose Rhodes if a substantial medieval old town is the main draw. Kos works best when you decide how much time you want in town before booking a distant beach hotel.

How many days to allow

Allow three full days for a short Kos stay: one for Kos Town, one for the Asklepieion and a nearby beach, and one for a different part of the island. A week gives more room for a resort stay, the southwest coast and a village outing without changing hotels. These are editorial pacing suggestions, not minimum stays or a transport timetable.

For three nights, keep one base. Splitting that short stay between Kos Town and Kefalos uses time on packing and a cross-island transfer. With a longer holiday, a town-and-western-beach split can make sense if those are genuinely the two experiences you want.

Start with a day in Kos Town

Begin around the harbour, Palm Tree Avenue and the square by the Plane Tree of Hippocrates. Continue to Eleftherias Square, then walk through the old town and the Ancient Agora area. Keep the Western Archaeological Zone for later in the day rather than treating all the ruins as one indoor museum visit. The municipality places the ferry harbour in the town centre, so this is also a useful first-day plan after a suitable arrival.

The Asklepieion is a separate trip southwest of town, reached through Platani. Pair it with a meal in Platani rather than expecting to encounter it on the harbour walk. Named monuments here describe the area; they do not establish that every interior is open on your chosen day, and admission is not included in this route.

Choose a beach day by coast

For a beach outing from Kos Town, start with Lambi to the northwest or the coast towards Psalidi to the southeast. Lambi has sandy stretches and a developed beach-and-restaurant strip; Psalidi includes pebbled shores and a cycle lane towards town. Tigaki and Marmari on the north coast suit a longer sandy-beach day, but wind can change the swimming conditions.

The southwest is a different outing. Kefalos combines the hill village with Kamari on the coast and beaches around the bay. Agios Stefanos faces Kastri islet beside early-Christian ruins. Do not plan the remote western coves as a quick addition to a town beach afternoon: transport and the final approach need their own time.

Airport arrival: book the correct last leg

Kos Airport (KGS) is at Antimachia, not in Kos Town. The airport lists bus links with Kos Town, Mastichari, Kardamena and Kefalos, with a stop about 50 metres from the terminal and tickets sold by the driver. That list establishes the destinations, not a bus meeting every flight.

For Tigaki, Marmari or an outlying hotel, work out the onward leg before buying a room on the assumption of a direct airport bus. A prearranged transfer is the simpler fallback after a late flight. For the town bus, the main KTEL location is 7 Kleopatras Street; a hotel at the far end of Lambi or Psalidi still requires another leg after reaching town.

Ferry arrival: Kos Town is not Mastichari

The municipality identifies Mandraki in Kos Town as the main harbour for mainland and inter-island ferries. It separately describes Mastichari as a western port, while Kardamena has its own harbour on the south coast. Match the ticket port to the accommodation transfer; a listing that just says Kos is not enough to plan a pickup.

The official arrival page names Blue Star Ferries and Dodekanisos Seaways as operators to consult for mainland and neighbouring-island journeys. It is a route overview, not dated sailing evidence. Do not turn its general daily wording into a guaranteed Rhodes–Kos connection on a particular date, a year-round catamaran frequency or a protected onward flight.

Getting around without hiring a car for the whole stay

Kos has two bus systems relevant to visitors. KTEL covers intercity routes, including Tigaki, Marmari, Mastichari, Kardamena, Kefalos and Zia; municipal buses serve the town-side areas such as Lambi, Psalidi, Agios Fokas and Platani. Use the appropriate network rather than assuming one town stop serves every journey.

A town base makes a mixed bus-and-walking trip easiest. Cycle lanes are useful around town, Lambi and Psalidi, but that does not make every island road a separated cycle route. For a southwest beach day, occasional car hire or a booked excursion can be more practical than trying to join several buses. Look at the actual return departure before setting out.

Seasons, village outings and spending

For a beach-led holiday, choose dates when your chosen resort, transport and activities are operating rather than relying on a summer description of the island. For a cooler-season town visit, prioritise the harbour, old town and specific open sites, with fewer assumptions about resort services. The municipality describes international air connections as concentrated in May to October; individual airlines and dates can differ.

Zia is an inland village on the slopes of Mount Dikeos, useful for a village meal and views rather than a beachfront base. If sunset is the aim, arrange the return separately instead of assuming the last public bus runs after dark. Budget for your room, airport transfers, optional vehicle hire, site admissions and any boat outing as separate lines. No current accommodation quote or fixed island-wide daily cost is implied here.
