Dodecanese island hopping: Rhodes, Kos and smaller islands

Choose a Rhodes or Kos gateway, compare Symi with the northern islands, and build a route around dated ferry connections.

Choose the gateway that suits most of your stay

For a first Dodecanese island-hopping trip, start with Rhodes if medieval-town walks and Lindos are priorities; start with Kos if you want Kos Town’s archaeology and a route towards Kalymnos, Leros or Patmos. Add one smaller island before attempting a long chain. Rhodes and Kos both have airports, but a cheap flight into one is not automatically a convenient arrival for a room on the other. The most useful route is the one that leaves time in the places you chose, not the one that includes the most islands.

Think in two clusters before joining them

A Rhodes–Symi stay and a Kos–Leros–Patmos journey answer different holiday plans. Dodekanisos Seaways’ destination page displayed a dated 25 October 2026 itinerary calling at Rhodes, Symi, Kos, Kalymnos, Leros, Lipsi and Patmos, followed by a southbound sequence. That is evidence of a connected corridor on that particular day. It is not a daily timetable, proof of a nonstop crossing, or confirmation that the whole sequence operates next summer. Use it to understand the order of places, then choose the exact leg and date in the operator’s search.

Symi: decide between an excursion and a stay

Choose Symi for its Gialos harbour and the hillside settlement of Chorio. A day excursion keeps your room on Rhodes; an overnight stay gives you an evening and morning on Symi but adds luggage handling and a return crossing. Panormitis is a separate settlement and destination on the island, not another name for Gialos. If the monastery matters, choose a programme that actually includes it rather than assuming every Symi ticket does. Upper-town accommodation also requires a separate assessment of the route uphill.

Kos and Patmos offer different reasons to stop

Kos suits a stay combining a working town, archaeological sites and beach days: the Ancient Agora and Roman Odeon are useful town priorities, while the Asklepieion lies outside the centre. Patmos centres on Skala’s arrival harbour, Chora and the Monastery of St John, plus the Cave of the Apocalypse. Choose Patmos when those visits and time in a smaller island’s settlements justify the boat journey. Do not make a distant religious-site visit a hurried stop between two ferries.

How many islands fit a week?

For roughly a week, our starting recommendation is one main island and one smaller island, not Rhodes, Kos and several short stops. For example, make Rhodes the longer stay and allow two or three nights on Symi if the dated crossings fit. For a northern-focused trip, give Kos and one of Leros or Patmos worthwhile stays rather than forcing both into a brief visit. These are editorial pacing suggestions, not packaged itineraries or verified sailing sequences. With more time, add an island only after confirming the next leg and the final journey back to your airport.

May–October excursions are not a year-round ferry calendar

The operator’s 3 August 2026 day-trip guide describes May–October departures from Rhodes and lists Symi, Nisyros, Tilos, Halki, Kastellorizo, Kos and Kalymnos among its excursion destinations. That statement concerns its seasonal day-trip offer. It neither closes every scheduled ferry in November nor confirms a return excursion on every October date. Compare the offered arrival and return times for your actual day; a destination listing alone cannot tell you how much usable time you have ashore.

Book the return geography before the extra island

If you fly home from Rhodes, account for the crossing back to Rhodes as part of the holiday. If you enter at Rhodes and leave from Kos, confirm the one-way flight arrangement and ferry legs before treating it as an efficient through-route. Keep a contingency stay near the final departure area when separate tickets make a missed flight costly. A main-island beach resort can be an inconvenient ferry base even when it is a good holiday base. Compare the room-to-port journey as well as the sea crossing.

What this route guide does not quote

No fixed fare, daily frequency or future-season sailing is assumed here. The connected October example is dated operator evidence, not a departure to copy into a later holiday. For costs, compare the actual room nights, each directed ferry leg, transfers and any vehicle booking; an extra cheap ticket can still create another paid travel day.

Start with the Rhodes stay before adding a crossing

Work out whether Rhodes Town or a coastal base gives you the holiday you want. The destination guide separates town days, Lindos and arrival logistics; the stay guide compares the actual overnight choices.

Follow a route, or choose a northern island base

The ten-day Rhodes–Symi–Kos plan keeps the trip in the southern chain. The fourteen-day alternative uses Rhodes, Kos, Leros and Patmos, with a final Kos night before flying out. For the northern stops, compare Leros’s harbour villages and wartime history with Patmos’s Skala, Chora and beach bases before allocating the nights.
