Rhodes travel guide: town, Lindos, beaches and arrivals

Rhodes works well as a holiday in its own right

Choose Rhodes if you want a substantial historic town, a separate village-and-acropolis visit at Lindos, and coastal days without changing islands. For a short car-free first visit, Rhodes Town is our simplest starting recommendation: spend time in the Medieval Town and make Lindos a planned outing. Choose a coastal resort instead when most days will centre on the beach or hotel. Rhodes has enough variety to fill the trip; a ferry excursion is optional, not a required addition.

Start with Rhodes Town, then give Lindos its own day

The Medieval Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the newer town adds a different layer of buildings from the Italian period. Spend a first full day on the town rather than combining it with an island-long sightseeing drive. Lindos is a separate settlement on the southeastern side of Rhodes, with whitewashed village streets below its acropolis. The trip there, the village and the ascent deserve a separate day if this is one of your main interests.

Lindos involves an uphill archaeological visit

Visit Greece describes the approach to Lindos Acropolis as a cobbled path through the village. At the top are the Temple of Athena Lindia and remains from several periods; the village below has captains’ houses and the church of Panagia. Plan the climb for a cooler part of the day when conditions and opening hours permit, carry water and choose footwear for uneven surfaces. If steps or heat make the ascent unsuitable, plan a village-and-coast visit instead. This guide does not certify step-free access or current admission prices.

A workable first stay: allow town and coast different days

As an editorial starting point, allow four or five nights for a selective first stay. Use one full day for Rhodes Town, another for Lindos, and another for a coastal day or a slower return to the town. Leave the arrival afternoon lightly planned. A week gives more room for beach days, an inland outing or a second base; it does not oblige you to collect more islands. These are suggested allocations, not a timetable or a claim that every attraction opens each day.

Arriving by air: use the airport-to-city link for a town stay

Rhodes Airport confirms a public bus between the airport and Rhodes city and locates its stop between the old and new terminals. That makes the city the clearest bus-supported arrival in this guide. The airport page does not establish a bus to every resort, the last departure after your flight, or a current fare. For a late arrival or a room elsewhere on the island, price the actual onward transfer before choosing the accommodation. Do not treat a city-bound bus as a hotel shuttle.

Getting to Lindos or a coastal base without a car

KTEL Rhodes lists distinct stops for the Rhodes–Lindos road through Faliraki, the Kallithea–Faliraki corridor, Kolymbia Beach, Lindos and Pefki. Those names matter: a main-road stop and a beach-area stop need not be equally useful for your room. Its schedule portal contains an embedded timetable, while some indexed route pages still show the expired 1 June–5 October 2025 validity period. We have not treated those old departures or fares as current. For a Lindos outing, choose the outward and return service together and locate your boarding stop before setting off.

Can you visit Rhodes without hiring a car?

Yes, a town-focused visit is a sensible car-free plan. It is a different proposition from using a remote hotel as a base for daily trips around the island. Keep your first stay within reach of the town streets and the transport you intend to use, then organise the Lindos day separately. If you want to spend most days in a beach resort, choose somewhere where meals and the beach suit you locally; the cost of repeated taxis can change the apparent saving on a room.

Add Symi only when it improves the holiday

Dodekanisos Seaways markets seasonal Rhodes day trips, including Symi, from May to October in its August 2026 guide. A return excursion avoids changing hotels; staying on Symi creates a different trip with a separate arrival and departure. The operator’s dated search, ticket and instructions must establish the actual sailing and boarding point. Do not turn an excursion advertisement into a guaranteed winter service, and do not assume every departure leaves from the same part of the Rhodes waterfront.

Choose dates and costs around the days you want

For a walking-led holiday, compare the time you will spend outdoors in Rhodes Town and climbing at Lindos rather than choosing dates solely for swimming. For a beach-led stay, the room’s beach access and the seasonal opening of the services you need matter more. Use real accommodation quotes for the same nights, include the airport transfer and separate sightseeing journeys, and check attraction admission at the official ticket source before budgeting. No island-wide daily cost or weather guarantee is assumed.

Choose the overnight base

For a town-led first visit, compare the Old Town with the newer town. If coastal days matter more, compare Faliraki, Lindos and Pefki against the transfers and evening journeys you actually want.
