Piraeus to Hydra ferry: crossing time, tickets and arrival

Take a passenger ferry from Piraeus to Hydra Town. Compare the actual sailing duration and return, then plan the final walk or sea taxi to your accommodation.

How long is the Piraeus to Hydra ferry?

Allow roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to about 2 hours at sea, sometimes longer with intermediate stops, according to Discover Greece. The duration shown for your selected departure matters more than the fastest advertised crossing. Add the journey across Athens, time to find the berth and boarding to that sea journey.

The ferry arrives at Hydra Town. It suits a car-free overnight stay or an independent day trip with enough time between the booked arrival and return. It is not the same product as a three-island sightseeing cruise, which divides the day between Hydra, Poros and Aegina.

Book the outbound and return as a pair

Alpha Lines lists Piraeus and Hydra in its booking network. Search your outward date and Hydra-to-Piraeus return before committing to a room or a day-trip plan. Compare departure, arrival, intermediate stops, fare conditions and the ticket-collection or check-in instructions for the actual sailing. A route appearing in a destination menu is not proof of seats or a departure on your date.

For a day trip, choose the time ashore first: a harbour walk and lunch need less room than a museum plus the coast towards Kamini. Buy a confirmed return rather than travelling out with only a plan to find a late boat. For an overnight stay, choose an arrival that leaves time to reach your accommodation before any arranged reception or sea transfer ends.

Which timetable and fare should you trust?

Use a dated booking result, not the static download on Alpha Lines’ Routes page. That page still labels its Piraeus–islands timetable 10 April–31 October 2021. The month and day resembling your travel date do not make the document current. Its linked price list is also not a live fare quote.

This guide does not quote a first or last ferry, a fixed daily frequency or a current fare. A summer listing does not establish winter operation. The reliable booking decision is a selectable outbound and return on the dates you need, followed by the operator’s latest service notices. If the desired dates are not available, do not infer either that the island has no service or that this operator will add a sailing.

Getting through Piraeus to the ferry

Travel to the Piraeus passenger port named on your ferry booking. Do not navigate to a sightseeing-cruise meeting point, yacht marina or the operator’s headquarters instead. Use the gate and berth in the ticket or latest operator message, then match the vessel and destination on the waterfront. Piraeus is a working port with several departure areas, not one terminal entrance.

Choose your Athens departure time backwards from the carrier’s boarding requirement, allowing for the walk from your station or taxi drop-off. Reaching Piraeus station is not the same as being ready to board. Keep the ticket or boarding pass available offline and carry the passenger identification required by the booking. If assistance is needed, arrange it for the booked vessel and both ports before paying.

Arrival at Hydra Town: no car transfer

Leave the ferry at Hydra Town harbour. A stay near the waterfront normally makes the luggage journey simpler than a room high in the lanes, but a central address can still involve steps. Obtain the property’s actual harbour-to-door route if carrying a case, travelling with a pushchair or avoiding stairs.

Kamini lies west along the coastal walking route; Vlychos is farther along that coast. Mandraki is east of town. For those stays, decide whether the luggage journey will be on foot or by an arranged sea taxi. Confirm the collection point and full transfer charge rather than assuming a shared shuttle will meet every ferry. Do not book a hire car for Hydra: ordinary visitor travel is on foot or by boat.

Return planning and disrupted crossings

Keep the departure-day outing close enough to Hydra Town to retrieve luggage and reach the ferry. A remote beach trip with its own boat return adds another connection before the journey to Piraeus. For a same-day visit, the harbour and a walk towards Kamini are easier to control than a beach excursion far along the coast.

Avoid making the island return a tight connection to an international flight or separately booked long-distance service. Weather can interrupt sea travel; an overnight in Athens before a flight is a planning buffer, not a guarantee against cancellation. If your sailing changes, resolve the ferry ticket and the accommodation or onward-ticket consequences separately.
