Hydra travel guide: where to stay and how to visit without a car
Choose Hydra for a walking-focused island break from Athens. Stay near the harbour for easy arrivals, or trade a longer luggage transfer for Kamini or Vlychos.
Is Hydra the right island for your trip?
Hydra suits travellers who want a harbour town, coastal walks and swimming stops without hiring a car. Ordinary private cars and motorcycles are not part of island transport: you arrive by boat and continue on foot or by sea taxi. That makes a short stay simple if you choose accommodation near your arrival point. It does not make the steep lanes and steps accessible to everyone. Choose Aegina instead if the priority is a shorter conventional-ferry trip, archaeological excursions or taking a vehicle. Choose Hydra if the town itself and time on foot are the reason for going. For this guide, two nights is a suggested pace, not a minimum stay or a packaged itinerary.
Visit Greece: HydraGetting to Hydra from Athens
Piraeus is the practical sea gateway from Athens. Alpha Lines lists Hydra in its Piraeus booking network; search both travel dates before choosing a hotel. Discover Greece describes crossings of roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to about 2 hours, sometimes longer with intermediate stops. Those are route-planning ranges, not a promise for a particular departure. Use the duration attached to the sailing you select. Do not use Alpha Lines’ static Routes PDF as a current timetable: the page still labels it 10 April–31 October 2021. Its booking search is a separate surface. A summer route listing does not establish a winter departure. No future sailing times or current fares are quoted here. Arrive into Hydra Town and plan the luggage journey from that harbour. A road transfer to the Peloponnese followed by another boat is an alternative geography, not a shortcut to assume when starting in central Athens.

| Compare | Best reason to choose it | What to resolve before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Hydra Town near the harbour | The simplest first visit, restaurants and return-ferry access on foot. | A harbour address can still lead uphill. Request the actual walking route, step count and luggage arrangements. |
| Upper town and Kiafa | Stay among the inland lanes rather than directly on the waterfront. | The climb is part of each outing. Avoid choosing on a view alone if you have heavy luggage or limited mobility. |
| Kamini | A small fishing harbour west of town, reached along the coastal walking route. | You are farther from the ferry arrival. Decide whether to walk with luggage or arrange a sea transfer. |
| Vlychos and nearby Plakes | A beach-focused stay beyond Kamini, with pebble-shore swimming. | Arrange arrival and departure transfers; do not budget on an assumed late boat back from dinner in town. |
| Mandraki | The sandy-beach alternative east of Hydra Town. | Allow for the journey between the bay and the main harbour; a beach booking does not include a sea taxi unless stated. |
What to do: town, coast or a beach boat
For a town visit, walk the harbour and its bastions, then explore the lanes behind the waterfront. The Hydra Museum–Historical Archives and Lazaros Koundouriotis Historical Mansion give the visit a maritime and historical focus. Choose one whose actual opening arrangements fit your day rather than assuming both are open whenever ferries run. For a coastal walk, head west towards Kamini and continue to Vlychos only if the heat and return distance suit you. These are linked settlements, not separate taxi stops on a road circuit. Carry water and leave time to return to the harbour. Spilia is a rocky, deep-water swimming spot close to town, not a shallow sandy beach. Vlychos is the pebble-beach option; Mandraki is the sandy alternative to the east. Bisti and Agios Nikolaos are farther southwest and are usually approached by sea. Treat those as a dedicated beach outing with an agreed return, rather than adding them at the end of a ferry day trip.

Book an outbound and return crossing that leave a worthwhile interval ashore. Begin at Hydra harbour, walk the waterfront and lanes, and make the first decision between a museum visit and a longer coastal walk. For a walking day, continue west to Kamini, have lunch there or back in town, then return towards the ferry harbour. Add Vlychos only when your actual arrival, walking pace and return boat leave room. Avoid committing to a remote beach boat as well as a museum and coastal walk. A shorter day ashore works better as Hydra Town plus Kamini than as a list of island-wide stops. If rough weather is forecast, reconsider the outing before leaving Athens rather than relying on the final return of the day.

On arrival day, check in, explore the harbour and nearby lanes, and eat in town. Staying overnight removes the same-day return deadline and lets you see the waterfront after day visitors have left. Use the full middle day for the west-coast walk through Kamini towards Vlychos, with a swim or lunch stop if conditions suit. Alternatively, use a boat trip to Bisti or Agios Nikolaos as the main outing, with the return arranged before departure. Do not try to combine both plans by default. On departure day, keep close to town. Visit the Historical Archives or Koundouriotis Mansion if open, or take a shorter harbour walk before collecting luggage. These are suggested day allocations; admission, boat operation and accommodation are booked separately.

April–June and September–October are useful starting points for a walking-led trip, with the date-specific forecast deciding how much coast walking or swimming is sensible. In high summer, make exposed walks an early-day activity. A winter town stay can work, but do not assume seasonal beach boats, restaurants or galleries are operating. Compare the whole stay: return ferry tickets, room, meals, any luggage handling and the sea taxis your chosen location needs. A cheaper room farther along the coast can add repeated transfer costs. Ask for the complete transfer price and collection point before agreeing, rather than assuming a fare per person or a regular shared service. Pack for carrying luggage over uneven surfaces. If steps are a concern, obtain a specific property-to-harbour access description before paying; the words car-free and central are not evidence of step-free access.
