Saronic islands: which island to choose from Athens?

Compare Aegina, Agistri, Poros, Hydra and Spetses for an Athens island break, with port choices, practical stays and ferry limits explained.

Which Saronic island should you choose?

Choose Aegina for a first short break with a walkable arrival town and the option of an archaeological excursion. Choose Agistri when swimming and a small beach base are the priority. Poros combines a harbour town with nearby beach areas; Hydra suits a walking-led stay without ordinary car traffic; Spetses fits a harbour-and-maritime-history break. For a day out from Athens, pick one island rather than trying to reproduce a three-island cruise using separate public ferries. For two or three nights, stay on the island that matches your activities. You do not need to change hotels to make the trip count as island travel.

Where the group sits, and why Athens is the starting point

The wider Argosaronic group runs between Attica and the Peloponnese and includes Salamina, Aegina, Agistri, Poros, Hydra and Spetses. This is an alternative to a Cyclades circuit, not a convenient extra stop between Naxos and Santorini. Start by matching an island to your Athens stay, then choose the crossing. Piraeus is the useful Athens port for the services discussed here. Saronic Ferries identifies Gate E8 for its Aegina, Agistri and Poros services; Blue Star also identifies E8 for Hydra. Your ticket and current boarding instructions determine the vessel and departure point. An airport arrival still needs a land transfer to the port.

Aegina and Agistri: the simpler short-break pairing

Aegina Town puts you beside the harbour on arrival. Stay there for a short visit without a car, then add Aphaia or Agia Marina only with onward transport. Agistri has two distinct arrival names: Saronic Ferries uses Skala, while Megalochori is another port on the island. Choose the port that matches the ticket and accommodation, not just the island name. Saronic Ferries describes connections between Aegina and Agistri, with higher summer frequency. This makes the pair worth investigating for a longer break, but does not prove a useful sailing on every date. For a first day trip, one island gives more time ashore than a pair with a second boarding and a return connection. If you have three island nights, one workable editorial approach is to spend them all in Aegina Town and make Agistri an optional excursion only when the dated return service leaves worthwhile time there. A stay in Skala instead suits a beach-first trip. Neither choice requires a booked multi-island package.

Poros: separate advertised routes from dated departures

Poros is useful if you want a harbour town and beaches without choosing a large island. The town and clock-tower area favour walks; Kanali and Askeli are named beach-base alternatives. A beach-area booking still needs an arrival plan from the port. Saronic Ferries advertises the Poros corridor, but its destination page displayed no scheduled trips for 24 October 2026 when checked. Its generic year-round wording is therefore not evidence of a departure that day. Search your outbound and return dates before choosing the service; do not copy a summer frequency into a winter plan or assume an Aegina–Poros continuation is available.

Hydra and Spetses: choose the stay before adding more stops

Hydra is the stronger choice when the point of the stay is harbour walks, stone lanes and time without ordinary car traffic. Blue Star advertises Piraeus–Hydra journeys from 1 hour 30 minutes, with departures selected in its booking flow. That is a published starting duration, not an Athens-hotel-to-Hydra transfer time. A harbour-side address can reduce luggage carrying, whereas rooms further uphill may involve steps. For swimming, Hydra includes rocky bathing places and pebble beaches; it is not simply a substitute for an easy sandy-beach resort. Decide whether walking and the harbour are the main attraction before paying for the crossing. Spetses offers a different maritime-history focus, including Dapia, the Old Port and the island's association with Bouboulina. Treat it as a destination choice rather than an automatic extra night after Hydra. This guide does not certify a Hydra–Spetses departure or a through-ticket on your dates.

Day trip, weekend or island-hopping holiday?

For one day, Aegina Town is the most straightforward plan described here: arrive at its main port, walk the waterfront and town lanes, and add Kolona if opening hours allow. Agistri is an alternative for a beach day when weather and the return crossing suit. Hydra works better when you specifically want its harbour and walking rather than maximising beach time. For two nights, keep one base. Arrive on day one, reserve the full middle day for your main activity, and leave the final day flexible around the return sailing. For four or more nights, consider two bases only after finding the inter-island leg in both your route and season. A map showing neighbouring islands does not establish a ferry circuit. Organised multi-island day cruises and public ferries solve different problems. A cruise fixes the stops and time ashore; an independent visit lets you choose one island and spend longer there. Do not assume a cruise's itinerary can be copied with unrelated public-ferry tickets.

When to go and what to budget

For swimming, select the trip around suitable sea and weather conditions and the facilities open at your chosen beach base. For an autumn or winter break, a town-led Aegina plan is less dependent on beach businesses than a remote coastal stay. A short crossing can still be delayed or cancelled, so leave space before a flight that you cannot miss. Compare the complete return ferry fare, room quote and land transfers. A cheaper room away from the arrival port may add taxi costs; changing islands adds another crossing and a partly used day. The budget should reflect those choices rather than an invented average price for all Saronic islands.
