Is Skopelos right for your trip?
Choose Skopelos if you want a harbour town, west-coast beaches and time in villages rather than a different island every day. Four or five nights is a useful first-stay allocation: enough for Chora, two beach days and the Glossa side without making every day a transfer. This is an editorial recommendation, not a minimum stay.
Skiathos is the simpler choice if a flight arrival and its own beaches are the priority. Skopelos adds a ferry and a separate journey from the arrival port to your room. For a short break, stay on one island instead of dividing three nights between both.
Municipality of Skopelos: ChoraGetting to Skopelos: the port name matters
Skopelos has no airport. A flight to Skiathos followed by a boat is one approach; a mainland journey to Volos followed by a ferry is another. Aegean Flying Dolphins advertises the Volos–Skiathos–Skopelos–Alonissos corridor. Its booking selector distinguishes SKOPELOS, GLOSSA and AGNONTAS SKOPELOU: these are not interchangeable arrival points.
For Chora accommodation, look for Skopelos Town as the arrival. Glossa sailings use Loutraki on the northwest coast, below the hill village of Glossa. Arriving there does not put you beside a room in Chora. Agnontas is a separate south-coast harbour; do not assume a sailing calling there also takes you to town. Match the ticket to the accommodation address before choosing the cheapest crossing.
The Ferries.gr agency table retrieved on 25 October 2026 lists the SEAJETS Volos corridor only through 31 October 2026. That table does not establish November service, next summer’s programme or a connection from a particular flight. Allow an overnight on Skiathos when flight and sailing times do not leave a workable transfer; separate flight and ferry tickets should not be treated as a protected connection.
Mantoudi on Evia is another gateway for an Athens-area start when the dated ferry and road connection work. Its harbour is Kymasi, and the Skopelos arrival still needs to match your base. For the reverse journey, arrange the island departure transfer and collection or coach at Kymasi separately.
Aegean Flying Dolphins: routes and separate port choicesGetting around: the winter weekend limit
The main bus corridor starts at Chora’s port and runs through Stafylos, Agnontas, Panormos, Milia, Kastani, Elios/Neo Klima and Glossa to Loutraki. It connects many useful beach stops, but it is not an island-wide sightseeing shuttle. In particular, a stop labelled Agios Ioannis on the main route is not evidence of a bus to the Mamma Mia chapel at Kastri.
The operator’s winter 2026–27 timetable took effect on 1 October 2026. On weekends and holidays it shows only 07:00 and 13:15 departures from Skopelos port, with returns starting at Loutraki at 08:00 and 14:15. Those are endpoint times, not the times at each beach. The 14:15 Loutraki service passes Panormos at 14:50 before reaching Chora at 15:15. A town-based visitor cannot use it for a sunset beach trip.
Weekdays have additional services, but the final outward row ends at Glossa rather than Loutraki. Use the actual stop and weekday columns. For off-corridor sightseeing or a late meal away from your base, budget for a taxi, organised excursion or rental car instead of assuming a later bus. These winter times are not a prediction of the next summer timetable.
Skopelos Transports: current routes and winter timetableWhich beaches deserve a separate outing?
Stafylos is the nearer south-coast option, about 4 km from Chora according to the municipality. Choose it when you want a beach outing without crossing to the far end of the island. Panormos is a west-coast pebble beach in a bay; its water deepens quickly, so do not choose it on the assumption that a sheltered-looking bay means a shallow paddling beach.
Milia and Kastani are alternatives along the west-coast bus corridor. Choose one as the main outing rather than promising yourself every beach on the same day. Agnontas combines a small harbour and beach with nearby taverns, making it a different choice from an open beach day. Seasonal facilities and sea conditions still determine what works on the day.
Municipality of Skopelos: beach geographyA practical five-night stay
Arrival day: transfer to your base and keep the evening local. If you stay in Chora, walk the harbour first; leave the stepped upper lanes for daylight rather than hauling luggage around them.
First full day: explore Chora, including Panayitsa of Pyrgos by the old port and, if the climb suits you, the lanes towards the castle. Leave space for a swim or a quiet afternoon rather than adding a cross-island trip.
Second full day: make Panormos, Milia or Kastani the main beach destination. On the winter weekend timetable, either return on the early-afternoon service or arrange your own later transport before setting out.
Third full day: visit Glossa and Loutraki together. Glossa is the hill village; Loutraki is the harbour below. If Agios Ioannis at Kastri is your priority, use a pre-arranged excursion, taxi or rental vehicle for that separate visit. The municipality describes roughly 106 steps to the chapel, so it is not a step-free stop. Do not mistake the main-road bus stop of the same saint’s name for the chapel.
Fourth full day: choose Stafylos or Agnontas, or keep it free if weather displaced an earlier outing. Departure day: travel to the port actually printed on your ticket. This sequence assumes five nights and four full days; it is not a bookable tour or a guarantee that each outing works in every season.
Municipality of Skopelos: Agios Ioannis at KastriWhen to go and what to budget for
Choose the main beach season when swimming and the broadest choice of seasonal services matter most. For an October or winter visit, build the trip around the smaller transport programme and a base where you can spend an enjoyable day without leaving it. Warm-looking weather does not extend an expired ferry table or summer bus timetable.
Price the whole journey: mainland or airport transfer, ferry in both directions, port-to-room transport and any off-route excursion. A beachfront room may reduce beach-day transport while increasing the cost of town evenings. We have not verified live room quotes, taxi fares or future ferry inventory, so there is no claimed all-in daily price here. Choose the area before comparing rooms.
