Athens, Delphi and Meteora itinerary: six or eight days

Allow six days for Athens, Delphi and a short Meteora visit, or eight days for a second Athens day and a full day at Meteora. Book the Delphi–Meteora road leg first and return to Athens before an important flight.

Which itinerary should you choose?

Choose eight days if you want time in both Athens and Meteora without combining monastery visits with the long return journey. The six-day route works as a compact road-based trip, but day five is busy. These are our suggested allocations, not operator packages or minimum-stay rules. Both routes run Athens → Delphi → Kalambaka/Kastraki → Athens. Neither assumes a direct Delphi–Meteora public bus or an uninterrupted train to Kalambaka.

Day-by-day Athens, Delphi and Meteora plans

6 days · 5 nights

Two Athens nights, one Delphi night, one Meteora-area night and a final Athens night. Use a car or confirmed road transfers; this is not a guaranteed public-bus sequence.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Athens

Stay centrally and keep the first evening for Syntagma, Plaka or a meal near your hotel. Do not attach Delphi to an international arrival day.

    Overnight: Athens

  2. Day 2

    Acropolis area and central Athens

Put the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum in the same city day, with a break between them. Use the Athens guide for ticket planning and a walk through Plaka rather than adding another long-distance excursion.

    Overnight: Athens

  3. Day 3

Athens to Delphi; sanctuary and museum

Travel to Delphi in the morning. Give the archaeological site and museum the afternoon, subject to that date’s admission hours. Sleep in modern Delphi, close to the site, rather than travelling straight on to Meteora. If the booked arrival is late, use the longer plan.

    Overnight: Delphi

  4. Day 4

    Delphi to Kalambaka or Kastraki

Take the prebooked road transfer north. Visit Meteora lists an approximately three-hour Delphi–Meteora transfer; allow extra time around collection and check-in. Use the remaining day for your base and viewpoints if weather and daylight allow. Do not rely on an unconfirmed afternoon monastery visit.

    Overnight: Kalambaka or Kastraki

  5. Day 5

Meteora monasteries, then return to Athens

Choose two monasteries open that day and arrange local transport plus the return journey in advance. Keep the visit to the morning; the long southbound journey occupies the rest of the day. If the actual departure does not leave enough visiting time, stay another night instead of compressing the visits.

    Overnight: Athens

  6. Day 6

Leave Athens or continue to an island

You are already back in the Athens area for your flight or ferry. An onward island needs additional nights outside this six-day plan; it is not a sightseeing stop squeezed into departure day.

Book Delphi to Meteora before the hotels

Athens–Delphi has intercity KTEL access, confirmed by Visit Greece. The awkward leg is the onward journey north. Visit Meteora currently advertises a shared transfer between Delphi and Meteora in both directions, with a journey of about three hours and pickup/drop-off arranged at booking. Use that as a real road-transfer option, not proof that any chosen date or departure time is available. The page mixes shared-service wording with a “Private transfer” field, so confirm whether your quote is shared or private, the total charge, luggage allowance and exact collection time before committing to non-refundable rooms. Entrance fees and meals are excluded. We do not quote a fare from the booking calendar or promise daily seats.

Public transport and driving are different plans

Without a car, combine Athens–Delphi public transport with a reserved Delphi–Meteora transfer, then a booked return from the Meteora area. A public-bus-only journey needs a date-specific connection chain; it should not inherit the three-hour road-transfer estimate. The operator’s travel guide warns that rail services may operate with changes, so this itinerary does not promise a through train. If driving, collect the car for the mainland section rather than paying to keep it during central Athens days. Leave room for stops and weather on the mountain approach to Delphi.

Visit Meteora: reaching Kalambaka and Kastraki

Where to sleep: Delphi, Kalambaka or Kastraki

Modern Delphi is next to the archaeological area and has hotels and tavernas; it is the practical overnight for a site visit before heading north. At Meteora, use Kalambaka for a town base and intercity-arrival logistics, or Kastraki for a village base beside the rock formations. Confirm which one a transfer actually serves. Neither base means every monastery is a short level walk from the hotel: road access, stairs and the return journey still need arranging.

Choose monasteries around the date and the stairs

Great Meteoron and Varlaam are a useful pair for history and architecture, but both require steps. St Stephen has bridge access and avoids a long staircase; that is not a guarantee that every part is wheelchair accessible. Holy Trinity has a demanding approach and is a poor substitute when stairs are the reason for choosing St Stephen. Arrange two visits for the compact plan or two to three for the full day, rather than trying to collect all six. Wear modest clothing: the local operator specifies covered shoulders, long trousers for men and below-knee skirts for women. Ask about your exact access needs before buying local transport.

The November timetable changes the route

The local operator’s timetable, checked 24 October 2026, separates April–October from November–March. It lists Great Meteoron closed on Tuesday in summer, but Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in winter; Varlaam is listed closed on Friday in summer and Thursday and Friday in winter. St Stephen is listed closed on Monday. These are operator-reported schedules, not a promise from the monasteries, which can change hours. For a winter Thursday, do not build the day around Great Meteoron or Varlaam; select open alternatives from the linked timetable. Two nights at Meteora give more room to adapt, but do not make a closed monastery open.

What to budget and what to leave out

Price the actual basket: five or seven accommodation nights, Athens–Delphi transport, the Delphi–Meteora leg, local monastery transport, the return to Athens, meals and admissions. A driver or shuttle does not automatically include a licensed site guide, museum entry or monastery contributions. For a car, add fuel, tolls, parking and the supplier’s insurance terms. Compare totals for your group rather than a per-person shuttle headline against a whole-car quote. This guide does not attach an invented daily budget or unverified admission total.

Keep the Athens return night before the islands or flight

Do not schedule the long Meteora return as the approach to an important same-day flight or a last ferry. Both plans already contain an Athens-area night after the mainland loop. For an island extension, keep that return, choose Piraeus or another port from the actual sailing, and add a proper island stay rather than a single recovery night. If you have only a week including beach time, choose either this mainland loop or an Athens-and-one-island trip.
