Is Alonissos right for your trip?
Alonissos suits a holiday built around a harbour base, village walks, beach outings and a possible marine-park boat day. Choose Patitiri for the simplest ferry arrival and access to services. Choose the Old Village for hilltop evenings, or Steni Vala when a small fishing harbour matters more than being near the main ferry port.
Allow four nights as a practical first-visit recommendation: an arrival afternoon, a village-and-walk day, a beach day and a flexible boat or second beach day. This is editorial pacing, not a minimum stay. Skiathos is the easier alternative if direct flight access and a broader sandy-beach choice matter more than Alonissos itself.

| Your decision | Best reason to choose it | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Patitiri | Main ferry harbour, services and a small town beach. Our first choice for a short stay without a car. | Harbour activity rather than a secluded beach setting; inspect the climb from the quay to the room. |
| Roussoum Yalos | A pebbly beach and taverns near Patitiri, if swimming near the room is the priority. | A separate luggage journey from the ferry; nearby does not mean level access. |
| Votsi | A smaller harbour setting north of Patitiri, with waterfront taverns. | Less convenient for repeated departures from the main port; establish how you will return after dinner. |
| Old Village / Chora | An uphill village base, with access to walking routes and evenings away from the ferry quay. | You are not staying at the port or on a beach; allow for hills and a transfer with luggage. |
| Steni Vala | A small harbour farther northeast, suitable for spending more of the stay in that part of the island. | It is a separate base, not a walk-out arrival from the Patitiri ferry. Summer bus coverage is not a winter guarantee. |
Arrive at Patitiri, not the Old Village
Patitiri is the central ferry port. Alonissos has no airport arrival of its own: flying to Skiathos still leaves an airport-to-harbour transfer and a ferry journey. Do not book a flight on the assumption that a same-day island connection exists.
Aegean Flying Dolphins advertises the Volos–Skiathos–Skopelos–Alonissos corridor. For an Athens start, compare a flight to Skiathos with the overland journey to Mantoudi on Evia and a dated ferry result. Choose the gateway using both the outward and return journeys; a route page is not proof of a sailing on a particular day. If flying home from Skiathos, our recommendation is to return there the day before the flight rather than rely on a same-day sea crossing.
Aegean Flying Dolphins: Volos–Sporades corridorCan you visit Alonissos without a car?
Yes, particularly with Patitiri as your base and a small number of planned outings. The municipality describes summer municipal buses from Patitiri to the Old Village and Steni Vala, and year-round taxi services. Its page does not give a dated timetable or last return, so it cannot establish a bus home after dinner or any October or winter service.
For a short car-free stay, keep the room near the places you will use daily and budget for a taxi for a farther outing. A remote coastal room can make every meal and ferry transfer a transport task. A rental car becomes more useful if you want several dispersed beaches; it is not needed simply to spend time in Patitiri and visit the Old Village.
Municipality of Alonissos: local transport and summer bus routesChoose a beach outing rather than a daily circuit
Roussoum Yalos is a pebbly option close to Patitiri with taverns; Votsi combines a small harbour with places to eat. For a separate outing, Leftos Yalos has white pebbles, while Kokkinokastro combines sand and pebbles below a red cliff. Milia is a small bay surrounded by pine forest. Those are different outings, not stops that need to fit into one afternoon.
The municipal beach guide distinguishes the more land-accessible southern coast from rocky stretches of the northwest where some beaches require a boat. Do not treat every marked cove as a road-accessible beach. Choose a land-based alternative before paying for a weather-dependent boat outing.
Municipality of Alonissos: beach geographyThe marine park is not a seal-watching guarantee
The National Marine Park includes Alonissos and surrounding islands such as Peristera and Kyra Panagia. NECCA identifies Piperi as the strictly protected core and an important monk-seal breeding habitat. A general sightseeing cruise does not grant access to every island, cave or beach. Choose an excursion for its named permitted stops, swimming arrangements and time aboard, not a promise of seeing seals.
The municipality states that entry to Zone A requires a ticket and directs visitors to the park ticket system. For a boat trip, establish whether the quoted price includes that ticket and which zone the itinerary enters. A ticket does not override the park’s separate restrictions. Do not approach seal caves or select a trip on the assumption that wildlife encounters are guaranteed.

Arrival day: settle in Patitiri or transfer directly to your chosen base. Keep the first swim and meal local rather than committing to a second long transfer.
First full day: visit the Old Village. Walk part of the old route between the village and Patitiri if the terrain and weather suit you, or use a road transfer. The municipality also describes a longer circuit via Megalos Mourtias; take a proper route description rather than using this overview as navigation.
Second full day: choose Kokkinokastro, Leftos Yalos or Milia as the main beach outing, with a return arrangement before leaving your base. A Patitiri-based traveller wanting fewer transfers can stay nearer Roussoum Yalos instead.
Third full day: take a marine-park excursion with permitted stops if operating conditions allow, or visit Steni Vala and keep the day on land. Ask about the boat early in the stay so there is room to swap days.
Departure day: return to Patitiri for the ticketed sailing. If combining Alonissos with Skopelos, arrange the onward transfer for the actual Skopelos arrival port, not just the island name.
Municipality of Alonissos: walking routesSummer and the quieter months require different plans
Summer is the period for which the municipality describes local bus links. Boat outings and beach services still depend on the operator and conditions; do not infer a guaranteed daily programme from general destination copy. In the quieter months, favour Patitiri’s concentration of services and build the holiday around what is operating, rather than a summer beach-transfer pattern.
Quote the room, return ferries, gateway transfer and any taxi or boat outing separately. No dependable current total can be derived from a historic ferry fare or an undated excursion advert. If marine-park boating is the main reason for coming, qualify the actual excursion dates before committing to a remote base.
