Island day trips from Athens: Aegina, Hydra or a three-island cruise?

Choose Aegina for a shorter independent trip, Hydra for a walking day, or a Hydra–Poros–Aegina cruise for brief visits with transport organised.

Which island day trip should you choose?

For a first independent island day trip from Athens, start with Aegina if you want a relatively short crossing and control over the day. Choose Hydra when the car-free town and coastal walking are the main reason to go. Choose an organised Hydra–Poros–Aegina cruise when seeing several harbours matters more than spending much time on one island. These are different days, not interchangeable ways to do the same itinerary. On a regular ferry you buy transport and build the visit yourself. On the three-island cruise you follow the ship’s programme, with lunch on board and shorter visits ashore. Neither option removes the trip from your Athens accommodation to the correct departure point.

Aegina independentlyA shorter sea journey, harbour lunch and a town walk, with an optional archaeological visit.Aphaia is a separate inland excursion; arrange transport rather than treating it as beside the ferry.
Hydra independentlyCar-free lanes, the harbour and a coastal walk towards Kamini. The crossing is longer and the town has slopes and steps; allow enough time between ferries.
Hydra–Poros–Aegina cruiseThree short island visits with the boat programme and lunch organised.Much of the day is aboard; the Poros call is particularly brief in the published programme.

Aegina: the straightforward independent choice

Saronic Ferries describes the Piraeus–Aegina Town crossing as about 1 hour 10 minutes, although the selected vessel’s duration can differ. Choose Aegina Town as the arrival for a simple harbour-based visit. Aegina has other ports, including Souvala and Agia Marina; a ticket to the island is not enough unless the arrival port matches your plan. For a town day, walk the waterfront and shopping lanes, make Kolona your archaeological option if its opening fits, and have lunch before returning to the port. For the Temple of Aphaia, replace part of the town time with a planned bus or taxi excursion and establish the return before leaving town. Do not add Aphaia, Perdika and a Moni boat outing to a short visit by default. Saronic’s generic first and last departure descriptions do not always match its dated departure list. Use the dated outbound and return, not a general claim of hourly summer service, to decide whether the day works.

Hydra: choose time to walk rather than more stops

Discover Greece gives roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to about 2 hours for the Piraeus crossing, sometimes longer with stops. That makes the actual ferry pair important: the fastest possible journey is not necessarily the departure you will book. Start in Hydra Town at the harbour and lanes. For a walking-led day, follow the coast west towards Kamini, have lunch there or back in town, and leave room for the return walk and boarding. Choose a town museum instead if heat or mobility makes a longer walk unsuitable, subject to its opening arrangements. Vlychos is an extension only when the available time and your pace allow it. Hydra is car-free, not step-free. Remote beaches such as Bisti and Agios Nikolaos involve another boat journey and an arranged return; they are a poor last-minute addition to a fixed ferry day.

What a three-island cruise actually gives you

Athens Day Cruise publishes a Hydra–Poros–Aegina programme with departure at 07:45 and return at 19:30. Its FAQ gives 19:45 instead, so treat the return as approximate and use the booking confirmation for the actual arrangements. This is a long day at sea and ashore, not three full island visits. The published island calls are 11:10–12:50 on Hydra, 13:55–14:40 on Poros and 16:10–17:55 on Aegina. These are the operator’s illustrative programme, subject to weather and port changes, not independent ferry connections or a guarantee for your date. The short Poros stop suits a waterfront visit; it does not leave time for an island-wide beach itinerary. The standard ticket includes a lunch buffet, entertainment and port taxes. The FAQ excludes optional shore excursions, drinks, breakfast and hotel transfers from the standard fare. Compare the complete booking price after those choices, rather than treating every advertised cruise as an all-inclusive day. Use the operator’s mapped meeting point and confirmation, not the regular ferry gate at Piraeus.

Families, access and booking constraints

A shorter Aegina day gives more flexibility than a roughly twelve-hour cruise if children tire or you only want a harbour lunch. That is a pacing recommendation, not a claim about every family or vessel. The named Athens Day Cruise operator does not permit infants under six months; it asks parents of older infants to bring their own supplies. Do not generalise that rule to regular ferries or other cruise companies. Its wheelchair arrangements vary by vessel and have limited availability, according to the FAQ. Obtain confirmation for your actual departure, including embarkation and island landings. Likewise, Hydra’s lack of ordinary cars does not remove cobbles or stairs. Choose the trip around the access you need, not a generic accessible or family-friendly label.

Seasons, weather and the full-day cost

Aegina’s main port has year-round links according to Saronic Ferries, but that does not mean every advertised departure runs all year. For Hydra or a cruise, establish a bookable dated outward and return or cruise departure before committing. Outside summer, favour a town-and-lunch plan over assuming beach boats or seasonal shore facilities will operate. For an independent visit, add return ferry tickets, Athens-to-port travel, meals and any island bus, taxi, museum or beach-boat spending. For the cruise, add departure-point transfers and the extras excluded from your chosen ticket. No current fare is quoted here because the date and package must be selected first. Keep the following flight or major transfer away from a tight return by sea. If conditions threaten the outing, a mainland Athens day avoids the risk of being unable to return from an island. A bundled cruise and independently booked ferries have different change and cancellation terms; read the terms attached to the product you buy.
